Community Series #18: Favorite Board Games

in communityseries •  7 years ago

If you’re like my family, tv is not something you watch on a consistent basis. While we enjoy a good movie here and there, most of our time together is spent playing board games.

We have come to find that guests are more than willing to stay long into the evening if there are board games involved. As such, we keep a variety of games available to satisfy all connoisseurs.

To date, we have 2 games that we frequently play with guests and as a family. Those 2 games are Acquire, and Fact or Crap.

Acquire is a game of strategy and finances. While each player has game pieces that build the companies on the board, each player is working to have a controlling interest in that company.

The winner of Acquire is the person with the most stock in the most valuable companies. You can win by holding cash, but it is unlikely you’re stash will grow big enough.

Fact or Crap is a game that anyone can play, and anyone will receive a good laugh from.

The premise is simple - one player reads a card of random facts to the group playing, and they decide whether they think it is a fact or crap.

Are you intrigued? Well, here are a few examples.

While running for President, John McCain jumped into a mosh pit and body surfer at Burning Man.

Sound far fetched? That’s because it is crap. If you were the first player to call it correctly then you win a point. Here’s another one.

Sharks do not get cancer.

Did you guess fact? Well, you lost a point - it is crap.

While there are points involved, there is no limit to how many points you need to win. We normally play until our laugh meter is empty and our abs hurt.

What are your favorite board games? Do you play as a family or have people over for game nights and food?

we used to always play board games when our kids were young - now we play with the grandkids (my granddaughter cheats at Monopoly) My favourite board game is Scrabble. The most memorable occasion being our anniversary (Dec 20) when Deb and I enjoyed a lamp lighting/Victorian Christmas at Pioneer Village and came home to champagne and Scrabble :)
We need to do that more often - hmm...good idea, lydon

Now those are some good memories. I love the champagne welcome party. :)

Personally, I've become a huge fan of Ticket to Ride, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and 7 Wonders. They're all fun to play with my wife and our siblings when we're together.

There is a lot more strategy to these games, so it's fun to see how each game plays out differently than the last.

Board games are fantastic fun. We'll often play them instead of watching movies or browsing online. Thanks for sharing this!

That is a great list! I have a few friends who rave about Ticket to Ride.

You’re right, the strategy games turn out different every time - it makes for good fun!

It's a fantastic game! There are a bunch of versions of it, so you can play the game on maps all over the world.

Strategy games are fun, but I especially like 7 Wonders, because it's difficult to know who is in the lead at any given point during the game. It's always a surprise at the end!

because it's difficult to know who is in the lead at any given point

That kind of strategy game is my favorite. The mental fortitude to focus on your own game only increases.

Even in games where you can tell who is leading, it can be a challenge to keep up with the score while maintaining your own strategy. So much fun.

Parcheesi has nearly caused bloodshed, if that counts lol.

Lol, it certainly does! Games of Dutch Blitz have been known to draw blood at our house.

I had not heard of Acquire.
Although I have heard of Fact or Crap, I have not played it.

Both look interesting. Thanks for describing them! ;)

😄😇😄

@creatr

You’re welcome!

One that I didn’t mention for the sake of time was Cashflow by Robert Kiyosaki. I’m sure you would enjoy that one. :)

Thanks for the mention! ;)

this is really cool :D

I'm a fan of Betrayal at House on the Hill with either family or board-gamer friends, and Arkham Horror with board-gamer friends (it's a little too involved for more casual players). For family-friendly classic board games with a nostalgic feel I also tend to enjoy Scrabble and Clue.

Ahh, some classics and a few new ones to me.

To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.

To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as [steemit](https://steemit.com) Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.
