Community Series #6: People You Have Met or Would Like to Meet

in communityseries •  7 years ago

2 months ago I shared the story behind my profile picture, and how I met Senator Rand Paul.

We all have a few individuals that we look up to for the courage they live with or the consistency they practice on a daily a basis. This week on the community series, we’ll talk about our experience meeting someone famous or reasons why we want to meet a specific person.

My athlete and business man of interest is Kobe Bryant. I did not grow up a Lakers fan, even though my dad is a fan. My interest in the Lakers blossomed as I followed the career of Kobe, and listened to the philosophy of this highly intelligent man.

Kobe speaks multiple languages, one of which is fluent Italian which he showcases in this press conference.

Mamba Mentality

A good work ethic is something my family values and has been a personal measuring stick for me when I meet someone new. If you do not have a good work ethic, it is unlikely that I will make time to be around you.

Kobe’s work habits are legendary, and there are stories where he would be in the gym for hours just to outwork those around him. One such story is told by Jay Williams (a former Duke star) who entered the gym hours after Kobe was there and left hours later before Kobe did. Jay was exhausted because he watched how hard Kobe was working and pushed himself to be better. He eventually gave up for the day and left. Kobe later admitted that he stayed in the gym till Jay was done to prove that Jay was not going to outwork him.

Living in Balance

There are many athletes that lose their way after their career is over because the sport is all they know to do. Within 2 years of their last game, 78% of NFL stars are struggling financially, and within 5 years, 60% of NBA stars are broke.1

Kobe has shown me another level since his playing days are over, as he has started his next passion in life, storytelling. The man loves to write, produce, and direct his own stories that are airing periodically on ESPN.

In addition to his storytelling, Kobe started a 100 million dollar investment fund. The fund is focusing on the technology sector and serves as an outlet for Kobe’s interest in becoming better every day of his life.

What about you? Is there someone you admire that you would like to meet someday? Is there someone you have met and you have a great story to share with us this week?

In 2010 or so I saw Robert Horry walking on the Las Vegas strip. He was by himself. His arms swung like legs and he moved so gracefully, and seemed like he was probably an athlete, and I looked up and it was Horry.

I was planning to go into Walgreens but figured I'd balk to work up the nerve to start talking to him. Oddly, he goes into Walgreens. So I quickly buy my oatmeal cream pies and I wait.

He leaves the store and I ride up the escalator with him.

"Mr Horry, can I ask you a question?"

He looks at me like, wtf, technically you just did ask a question, let's get this over with, kid.

But it's not the typical fanboy/starstruck sort of question. I just really want to know.

"When you're taking a big shot, do you approach it any different, or it's the same as any other shot?"

He says he goes into it the exact same way. I ask a followup, something along the lines of if there's any unconscious feeling inside him that kind of knows it's a bigger moment and dials him in in a different way.

"To be honest with you," he tells me, "when you're in the moment you're not even thinking about it."

He said it like he had ice water in his veins. We were at the top of the escalator at this point so I thanked him for answering and let him walk.

Now that is a cool story.

You hear athletes talk about the big moments not being any different to them - nice to hear one be consistent off the court as well.

Those oatmeal cream pies were definitely worth the money, and the walk that day. 😏

Hehe for sure, "Big Shot Bob" was cool, fun to interrogate him a little about how he makes the sausage :)

well there are so much people i would like to meet but i can only dream about it huhhh

May you name one of them?

John Free is a pretty good street photographer I think would be interesting to meet.

He has some nice work. Street photographers always have a different view on life - it's fun to see it through their lense.

Yeah he has some good YT vids. Street photography is hard. These arent people being paid to pose LOL. He captures real life in real time...without getting beat up lol. He is energetic, passionate, artistic and emphasizes catching the emotion in a photo...the happy, the sad...that what makes him interesting to me.

yeah I want to meet Emma Watson <3

Good one. :)

Ohh Kobe! This man is my favorite player. His mentality is something beautiful and his work ethic is amazing. I almost cried when I saw him playing his last match of his career. It was something epic to watch this guy dominating.

That last game was epic. It was so good to see him go out on a high note.

I would love to meet Ron Paul and work in his kitchen with the family freeze drying this years harvest ;-)

Now that sounds like a great time with great people. :)

Great post! You have a outstanding profile picture. It would make a great painting.

a spirit of excellence is what marks greatness.

Curiously, I have absolutely no heroes. I've seen what's in the human heart including my own. I've listened to interviews where celebrities spoke of loving themselves and their bodies - that is totally foreign to me.

The other day I solved a computer-related technical problem that had vexed me for almost four days. A voice in my head said, you should be proud of yourself. I laughed and said, get behind me, Satan.

I've never been proud of anything I've done in my life - that concept is totally foreign to me...

and I'm certainly not going to beat the drum for a stranger whose life I don't know

I never took you for a guy that had heroes - this confirms that. :)

But I did have mentors - they still speak to me inside my head. Heroes are so overrated :)

Hero sounds like perfection to me - there's only One hero. :)

Well, if you just read Paradise Lost you'd think it was Satan...but I read to the end. Considering that, maybe, I do have one hero...

Milton that well known anarchist!
I got in so much trouble with my essay on Paradise Lost. ;)

ha ha, coming from that viewpoint, yes :)

My English lecturer almost had a fit lol when I reminded him that Milton had attacked the Bishops and demanded they be 'got rid of' lol
He was apoplectic haha

You make a good point concerning the number of sports people that make fortunes while in the game but go broke very quickly after they quit. Long term financial planning seems to be lacking in their education.

Who would I like to meet? Nobody springs to mind. Most of the people I'm impressed with are dead but If I had a time machine. I'd meet Michelle de Montaigne or Samuel Pepys. I just like there writing and attitude.

Montaigne, nice choice. I hadn't thought of the time machine option.

It would come in handy, wouldn't it lol

I've met Robert Plant, Joe Walsh, Neil Young, Arlo Guthrie, Milton Berle, Henny Youngman, Debby Gibson, Dr. J (Julius Irving- Philadelphia 76ers), Lisa Thomas Laury (Philadelphia news reporter), Frank Rizzo (former Philadelphia mayor) and Bill Britt (business owner, now deceased). I would like to meet many people in the crypto space such as Eric Vorhees, Charlie Shrem, Max Keiser, @Ned Scott, @Dan Larimer, Andreas Antonopolis, @Papa-Pepper, and even you Lydon.

Wow, that is quite the list.

There are so many smart people in the crypto space, it would be enjoyable to meet some of them. It would be a joy to meet you as well, brother.

Don't you live somewhere in the southeast, like Georgia?

We live just outside of Lexington, KY.

Nice. Next time I go back to PA, I'll stop by and see you.

That will be great!

I would like to meet Leonardo DaVinci.

I have met and told about Jim Lovell...

😄😇😄

@creatr

DaVinci, nice choice. I could see you guys getting along quite well. :)
