CompensationFund: donations for victims of financial scams or fraud

in compensation •  7 years ago  (edited)

The @compensationfund account was created by @geke to serve as a donation pool to compensate victims of financial scams or frauds on Steemit. Funds donated to this account will be dispersed transparently with oversight and management performed by the following: @geke, @neoxian, and @patrice.

The idea for this account was born when @neoxian very generously offered to compensate the victims of the bellyrub scam from his own resources. @geke wondered if there was also a fund where others could donate in a similar gesture. He said no, but that the idea had merit. Feeling she’d been given a sort of permission, she implemented the idea a few minutes later.

We’re currently working with a list of the accounts defrauded by @bellyrubbank. As donations come in, we’ll begin dispersing compensation. We will be keeping an eye on blockchain transfers so that nobody gets over-compensated for their losses. And we thank everyone for their patience as we figure out the best way forward.

Once the payouts have been dispersed to the bellyrub victims, this account will remain open and empty to function in a similar way should the need arise again. Of course, our hope is, it won’t.

To donate, simply transfer any amount of STEEM or SBD to @compensationfund. A full 100 percent of the donations received will be dispersed to the victims; we’re not charging or accepting any administration fees. None of our posts will accept payout. And once this compensation effort is over, our wallet will remain empty, with the exception of its original 6 SP.

We’ll be posting periodic updates on our efforts and will highlight our donors, so please stay tuned. Thanks to everyone for your help and support, and especially to @neoxian for his contagious generosity!

it would be better if this fund was used to prosecute scammers imho

Wow. Awesome idea! 😁

I hope maybe some of the "whistle blowers" (and opportunists) that got $50 and higher payouts for their Zeartul posts might consider donating a portion of their payouts. Seems that would be kind and generous of them.

What I am not comfortable seeing is further Reward Pool drain as a quick fix to amass funds to fix this scandal.

Either way, there is no win in this situation.

I applaud what you are seeking to do. I hope this outpouring of generosity doesn't embolden these "loaners" to just go put their money at risk somewhere else.

Thank you @geke for being such a caring and generous Steemian!! I would vote you for witness anyday!!
Peace

oh gosh - thanks! but I wouldn't even know how to be a witness. I can barely turn on my laptop.

I thought a geek meant expert in computers and electronics :p

Cool thing you are doing here. Best of luck helping the bellyrub victims.

Thanks a lot for setting up this fund, @geke!

@geke While your efforts are noble, cleaning up someone else's mess only makes it easy for the next scam to fester.

As sad as it sounds 'investing' can sometimes mean losing. Putting funds into something promising more than it could ever deliver is a hard lesson 'earned' and lost.

Greed is when something too good to be true is believed as truth, even when all red flags say otherwise.

Peace.

A way to not drain the reward pool uselessly would be to create a mini group where victims are encouraged to create high quality posts and are rewarded handsomely with a high voting weight. Like this, we can have content vs/ higher reward until they are compensated fully over time.

They could even be given specific topics to write about. In a way, it could be like generously employing them as bloggers. ;-) .

This would also rebuild their confidence in the platform. ;-).

Not a bad idea

So true regarding the rewards that it is pretty much a lose lose situation for all. Draining the rewards pool to compensate for the lost while actual rewards to those that deserve it are reduced. Hate to see this happening again.

I have a feeling "whistle blowers" was directed at me as I was the one who called him out and I believe had the largest post reward. I have given nearly 100% of the rewards away even before it locked. No one should be expected to give away their post rewards they earn.

Resteem this for #whalepower Tag Community.

This was a very generous gesture by @neoxian and the rest of you. Thanks for setting this up @geke!

It's not much, but I will commit the liquid earnings from my recent posts related to this scammer towards this fund when it pays out in a few days:

@zeartul "hacked." Here's what we know about him so far.

Please help stop @zeartul from getting away with his scam. Make Poloniex aware of it.

@dang007 denies being the new owner of @bellyrub

@bellyrub is a scam and is now in full-on war mode against...everyone.

It is very cool that you are doing this for the people who were wronged. Sending a small donation.

Hope people don't start scamming now that future victims have an insurance ... insurance? That would be a great idea.. "Steemit Insurance"

I doubt that there will be enough funds donated to cover all losses, but even partial recovery is better than a total loss. Scammers will scam regardless.

Wow, you all are doing an amazing job in this effort..This is what community is all about!! Thank you!!!! BLESSINGS😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏

awesome - resteemed for extra visibility

I just wanna say I'm thankful the group of you or setting this up. I only lost a small amount compared to others but it still was disappointing... I'm more thankful that the people who lost alot and need it are getting paid back! @cryptopie

Lost 1000 steem on this scam. Expensive lesson.

This effort from @geke, @neoxian, and @patrice is making steemit a better place in the long run. Thank you.

I was just pondering is there any likelyhood @zeartul can come back just using a different pseudonym? Hate to see this happen continuously.

That’s such a great thing to see, the compassion of users on Steemit is extraordinarily.

I am lucky I only invested once in Belyrub Bank and only for 20 so its a lesson learnt to be more cautious

Thank you! You have no idea what that means to me...

Thank you very much for the compensations that I have been able to receive from you!
I think they are doing a great job, and in some way, showing that there are a lot of honest people here!
I think that what you are doing should be more recognized ... do you allow me to do the Spanish version of this publication?

Thank you! For this idea :)
