The Dumpster Dive Challenge! Win 10 SBD!!

in competition •  7 years ago  (edited)

Right Steemians- who wants to start making a change in the world? Do you want to eat quality food instead of the cheap crap that your wage or government benifits allows you to eat and help the environment all at the same time?!

People are becoming more and more aware about foods and what is good to eat and what isn't but the prices of good foods are going up but the wages people receive just arn't. Every human has the right to eat good food that will keep them healthy and to enjoy a good quality of life, but yet somehow even people in the western world are eating the cheapest brand supermarket foods instead of affording to eat quality fresh Organic Foodseven when so much food is going daily to waste.

I decided to do a contest to invite people who are beyond curious about how Dumpster-diving works and just need that little extra push to actually go out there and do it.
It will be a competition open for 3 days and ill will be investing in bots so people will see it and hopefully give it a go!!

The idea is that you must go out and check your local stores trash for edible goods. Document the mission and then make a quality post about it. I will give you 3 SBD for participating, and 10 SBD to the winner, being whoever has found the most costing things in the trash (we use the shelf value converted to the counrty's average wage and work out how many hours worth of work you have found in food - the one with the most working hours will win the 10 SBD. Any flaws found in this method , please tell me!)
Add @movingman as a mention in the dumpster-diving post you created and that qualify's you to enter this challenge. Easy huh?

So ill leave it a few days for this to be seen. Ha yeh right.. Ill give it until Wednesday 12.00 Daytime UTC and see if anybody wants to take part in this competition, by leaving a comment below. Then it can begin at 12.00UTC Wednesday 26th and finish 12.00UTC Saturday 2nd May. I will do this regularly as I want to see more people trying it out. It changes lives, and helps fight against food waste in the most direct way possible!

Resteem this post so others can also take part, this will be fun! Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

PLEASE READ:

This competition is only open (for now) to Steemians who haven't yet ever gone dumpsterdiving..
Please though, do not go touching containers that smell bad, or take any foods that have maggots in them. Basically if it dosn't look like it should do then leave it. If its vegetables or fruit and has a patch of mold on it , you can cut away the mold with a pocket knife. This combined with wearing gloves, oh , and using common sense will make this new experience much more enjoyable! Take the food home and wash the packaging also and dry it with a towel before storing it.

Great idea, have you had any takers? We used to do this all the time in the UK. We grow so many of our own vegies now we don't have to, plus make our own bread etc etc and have enough cash to do so, but seriously, the amount of food waste going on in the world, why the hell don't they just have a big box labelled 'FREE - take at own risk' out the front.

There was two students from Nigeria who thought it was a great idea, even mention they would make a video of it! I think that was the only ones up for it. Steemit have taken away the viewer ticker, so I have no clue even how many people saw it. Maybe they will make an epic post and then they will get the 10 sbd and 3 sbd for taking part :) all fun and games anyway!

Oh yeah why did they take away the viewer ticker??? In some ways it's better - if you have a hundred pople view it and no one upvotes you it might make you literally dive into a dumpster and not come out haha. And how do you keep track of everyone - I have saved links to crew like you on my browser but obvs cant do it on my phone -- or am i missing a tool i dont know about?

hahaha! I noticed that many people viewed something but yeh no upvotes hahahah Anyway when writing about alternative freak living, I dont expect much upvotes but to plant seeds in minds is priceless :)

absolutely ... you need a big crazy machine seed sprayer - oh hey, you have steemit!

You never know what treasures you may find in supermarket skips. Charity shop skips are great too. 😊

I always used to like the Co-op skip :) I remember once in Radstock their freezers broke, and they were literally chucking out all the frozen stuff out the back door as we were picking it up - they were virtually putting it in our hands, bless em - they'd been told to chuck it but it was still frozen and the staff KNEW it was a waste. It was a hot day and people bought all these packs of ice lollies back to site and told us if we wanted any food the co-op was giving it away so we all piled down there. Happy days.

When i lived in the forest of Dean at a site a few years ago we found the co-op was always the best place to skip. Haha our lives ar so parallel @riverflows 😊

Aren't they! And we know exactly what t'other is speaking of. x

I love it, i really do
Were so blessed 😊x

Ah yeh man, oh and in Brighton one time when back in UK, i went into Shelter shop and just asked if they would give me a tshirt as i stank, and they did :)

yeh and second hand shops trash is great aslo! samething when I think about it lol

Thats brilliant @movingman and so they should too! Thats exactly why charity shops should be there, not as money making businesses but as support for community! 😊

Gotta love Brighton :)

Great idea man! Resteemed!

Ill be doing it regular, i thinks its a great idea also! Thanks dude 😁

Sounds like a fun and rewarding Idea. Will have to see what is around before we can take part. Hope this goes well people throw far to much good food away in our wasteful world. 😎

Any supermarket works, but even though one would think the bigger ones are better, usually they are inaccessable and crushed into a block. You be surprised to learn that the smaller supermarkets even the tiny ones are much better.. For instance ones in a village. Bakerys and butchers also 😀

How do you plan to score the findings. For example we have native fruits and vegetables that are eaten here . But might not be eaten outside Nigeria, like in UK

I thought about this, and maybe we should make it so its based on each countries adverage daily wage, and the price amount of the food was found? So like if here in norway and say the adverage wage is 150kr per hour and someone finds foods worth 1500kr -then this would be scored as 10 hours..
would this work you think? im tired and stoned hahahaahah

Trashwiki may have help in locating sone, but trust me just go look some places in the night or evening, theres trash everywhere! Even if its failed first time mission, you still get 3sbd for taking part!

Thanks for the advise my friend. We have quite a few small supermarkets and shops around our village. Will seriously go and check them out next week. Although if we see other people who appear to need it rather than just trying to save money, we might have to pass. There is a lot of poverty on our island which is a shame because there is an abundance of wealth too. But no harm in checking it out. 😎CameraZOOM-20180326112401570.jpg

Where are you in the world? Theres enough trash for everybody! If you go there and theres people already doing it, the id be surprised! Its not about "saving money" thats just a perk to it all 😊 on many occassions I have given the foods after finding it to people on the street and also even taken the hungry people with me to go and dumpsterdive, showing them where it is

We live in the Canaries. On the Island of Lanzarote. But yes thats a cool Idea, redistribution. I'll get back to you 😎

I bet theres hippies living there somewhere, youll proberbly meet them at the dumpsters after closing hours, but the unsaid rule is that whoever is at the dumpster shares it out between whoever is there. I been many times in random european countrys and seen people waiting for a dumpster to get filled up and I go there and help sort it out and take a share. nice place to live, where were you born?

Sounds like a great place to meet people.
We moved from Salisbury Wiltshire UK 18 years ago. My wife Jemma, was originally from the Seychelles, but lived in the UK from her early 20s. 😀

Ah cool im from the other end :) Yeh youd most likely meet the "alternative" scene at the dumpsters hahahaha

Good post thanks for sharing

What a challenge this is. People will be looking and laughing. But it's worth a try. I'm in.

The people looking and laughing arnt ready to break the mould yet :)
It seems your the first to officially enter!
No rush though, it starts Wednesday.. What country are you in?
edit:
I see your a student entrepreneur- ha, your going to enjoy this challenge! I showed my student mates in Uk, that said they were eating like kings from that day out, and had huge cook ups for poor students :)

Yeah. It's gonna be fun. I'm from Nigeria.
Students here picture an healthy food as one with lots of roasted chicken.😂😂

haha thats funny! Im very interested to see a blog of your dumpsterdiving mission :)

My room mate thinks it's so cool. He wants to join the mission. I will have to make a video documentation of the adventure

YES! this is what its alllll about my friend (s)! Does your room mate have a steem account already?
Im exited to see this from you guys!!

You can actually try before Wednesday and make a post ready to realese on wednesday at 12.00 UTC :) thats why I left some time also as I know not everyone has time one evening to go look for edible treasures

This is the saddest thing I have ever read on Steemit. Every day all over the world thousands and thousands of pounds of good food are thrown out. Restaurants, stores and hotels. However, I have worked in several stores large and small. Diving into the dumpster is not something I would recommend unless you want all kinds of bacteria. First off they don't always put it in the dumpster right away, and even though it should be refrigerated it stays in the back room for days, before they toss it. In the warm weather the dumpsters are full of flies and maggots. The stores who have a little bit of public interest at heart put a lid on the dumpster. What is needed is the start of a campaign to encourage them all to give the food away when it is still fresh to the local food bank. To encourage folks to rummage around in the maggots is just insane. Using a Bot to encourage this behaviour is a double whammy. Shame on you. Food should be free or very inexpensive, since a person's has better dignity if they pay a little or barter. Let'sfind clean ways to feed them.

Its obvious that you havent heard of the term "dumpsterdive" before, so Im happy to introduce you, theres no actually diving into a dumpster involved. Unless you live in a country with no mainstream westernized supermarkets, you would know that food is wrapped in alot of packaging - another problem in the world. I guess I was lucky because the first "career" I thought I needed to have a good life was cheffing for 4 years and so I learnt the basics of foods without relying on a government capitalistic sell by date on it. Anybody who has even the thought of maggot covered foods linked to dumpsterdiving isnt really the kind of people I would expect to give this a try anyway..

Some places you can go get an agreement with them that you get it before they trash it but like I say , in europe theres like so much packaging, im afraid more of all the plastic than some mould on an apple hahaha..

I think you should take part in this competition @marionbowes! Do something cool and proove the mind wrong !

If someone in this competition, goes to the local store and finds a trash can full of maggots, then what sane person would even think to rumage though that? obviously one would take a picture of the maggots, and say in their post "There were maggots so yeh", and they would recieve 3 SBD for their attempt. Not really sure where your comming from without linking your past with this now, but anyway thanks for your thoughts and feelings on this great idea!

Edit added: Your answer to this quote.. "Using a Bot to encourage this behaviour is a double whammy. Shame on you."

Im happy that you have never met an anarchistic freak before, Hi ! ✋

Yes, I have heard the term. However in this Country it is against the law for stores to give food away that they wont sell. which is totally stupid. like I said I have worked in them. The large chains were just as bad as the small retail. I sadly have been forced to throw out tons of food. Also worked in a restaurant. Same nonsense. Perhaps a better term could be used, since sadly I have seen people looking for things in dumpsters. I dont need to do this, but I do give to the local food banks in large quantities. Also anyone who wants can have what I grow here for free, or I will barter.

People seem to think its all about MONEY , "If I have enough money, then why should I buy food?" and the phycological game of the ego creeps in also.. Heres a great example of the mentality of our conditioned mind, A friend said to me in England "if I didnt have to buy food , I dont know what id spend my money on."..
One time I was getting food from the regular food container, and a worker came out and had a go at me saying I was a tramp, I should get a job bla bla bla or should I say Baa Baa Baa. I asked him a personal question - how much money do you have in your bank account? He didnt answer. I walked over to him and produced my neck pouch from under my tshirt, and pulled out 5000 euro in cash as i was working at the time on a building project. I fanned the cash out under his shocked eyes, and I said, "it dosnt matter how much money I have, why the hell should I go in the store there and support this insanity, the food is poisoned with chemicals and im expected to work for it when its here in the trash?"

We all decide how we live, you can either stay in the box of society, or you can live alternativly exactly how I , and many others are doing and have done. The world is far from what it seems :)

edit , i get the feeling as you grow food yourself that youve already gone abit away from society?

That's great you did that. I agree - it doesn't matter how much cash you have, if you can get stuff through other people's waste, good on you. We've always had enough to get by - never needed exactly to dumpster dive but we did coz it was there and we had money to spend on other things, like making the truck liveable and saving cash to get to Australia and so on. And yeah, why do we have to work for stuff they throw away?

but we did coz it was there and we had money to spend on other things, like making the truck liveable and saving cash to get to Australia and so on. And yeah, why do we have to work for stuff they throw away?

Thats exactly what its about for me, if I work, I dont want to pay to live. I want to pay for things that will improve the quality of LIFE and not just to keep me alive in a slaves world!

Yes!!!

I am not mainstream, and live partially off grid..I am very careful what I purchase, where and how, I have removed myself from mainstream society about 60%.

Imagine to go all the way to 98% then you'd be a proffesional recycler for sure (thats the term thats lighter on the ears :) )
Nice to meet you on here, im following to see your posts! i need to sleep now its late here

nice to meet you too on this platform, let's see where this leads ...I am following you as well

.

So in closure... In this Country, Dumpster Diving means actually going into the dumpster or through someones trash. Different countries, different terminologies.

Well yes, i do mean to go through trash and this post is about food! To dumpsterdive is exactly what the challenge is to do :) Maybe I should write list of protective equiptment to use, like "wear gloves"? to be honest ive not really come across any discusting trash cans, ok in spain yes, but obviously if they stink then its a no go from that point on! people still have common sense though right?!

Hello. Great idea man! Very interesting.

Dumpster dive challenge. I find that offensive to those who live in dumpsters.

Are you up for the challenge? :)

Just a heads up @movingman, you are responding to a comment spammer who doesn't even have the common courtesy to throw you an upvote.

i know this but i am starting a new idea, to give an upvote and ask a question.. if theres no reply in a few days the upvote gets removed..

Are you up for the challenge whilst your here?! :)

When I was younger and had more time I would definitely accept this interesting challenge. I like it so the least I can do is resteem.

Thanks :) I follow who I get nice vibes from :)

wait a minute.. i read there that your a father, if your kids are young enough to find it cool before the consuming mentality has started, then make it a family event! Ive taken my nephews dumpsterdiving , they were 8 at the time hahaha, I hope they will never forget that when they are hungry and jobless at some point like most people are, that they can just laugh at the society which left them jobless in the first place, and go eat good food for free!

Obviously not maggot infested foods hahahahha :)

Our two are both in college currently. For what it's worth we are a Goodwill hunting family.
