Men who make metaphorical compliments are getting better and are more attractive to women than those who make literal compliments, a new study found. The study was conducted in China and the Chinese have liked many more men who use compliments such as "Your eyes are like morning dew". And the standard phrases of "Your lips are so sexy" have not been as well accepted as you could have expected.
Clearly, what kind of compliments are more romantic, but the use of metaphor here has another important function that remains hidden in the superficial view. Using metaphors requires more intelligence and creativity to formulate them, giving the lady a signal about the intelligence and creativity of the man against it. The authors of the study explain:
"We are making very quick impressions on the attractiveness of people to us in a social context. Therefore, key moments from the interlocutor's language can give the ladies a very quick impression of their intellectual potential and creative abilities. "
Besides compliments about the look of the lady, the study has also explored the situation with compliments for her home. Participants used metaphorical expressions like "Your roof is like a lover's shoulder," along with literal expressions like "Your Door is Very Healthy". Apparently, compliments to home have not produced such an effect as they have complimented the girl's personality, but again, the metaphors have made much more success.
"Women, unlike men, prefer creativity and intellect to physical beauty . In our study, the ladies did indeed accept those of the cavalars who expressed themselves metaphorically as people of higher intelligence than the cavalars with literal compliments, "they end up with the team.
