Joe Hart insists England have learnt from their disappointing World Cup campaign and will aim to secure Euro 2016 qualification as quickly as possible.
Despite failing to win a game in Brazil this summer, few are doubting the Three Lions’ ability to seal their spot in forthcoming championship finals in France.
And Roy Hodgson’s men began their campaign in fine style, with Danny Welbeck’s brace guiding the side to a 2-0 win in Switzerland.
Hart, who also played a vital role in the victory in Basle, acknowledges it was a huge result against their main threat in the race to top Group E and insists the team are confident for the rest of their schedule.
"It is a new campaign so three points was vital against one of the main contenders for the group," Hart said. "It was a really good result.
"We are fighting for the European Championships. We've learnt from the summer, taken the positives and negatives, and we're going to take them into this campaign and hopefully get to France as soon as possible.
"We've always been confident. I can't remember a performance when we didn't play with confidence. We played well, executed a plan and we got the victory.
"We exposed them and scared them," he added. "We knew as soon as we turned the ball over they were in trouble.”
