Scare Bear [Fictioneers Writing Contest Entry]

Dew mixed with sweat as it dripped from Tiffany's chin. She swayed with the crowd as it lurched to be let in. A sales associate retrieved the keys from the floor, and her hands trembled as she unlocked the door. No holding them back, the crowd spilled through the crack, with Tiffany head of the pack.

Blows from elbows were not enough to slow her flow between the rows of cheap clothes and greedy hos. She'd have her prize before sunrise and be a hero in that brat's eyes. She could already hear the cries of surprise, and the praising of Tiffany, The Wise.

Her cheeks ached from her grin as she approached The Scare Bear, sold out everywhere but there. She snatched it and tucked it and gripped it with care. If only there were two, she'd be a millionaire!

As she proceeded to withdraw she was impeded by a claw attached to some man that smelled of french fries. No hem or haw, she gave him a southpaw to the jaw, but didn't expect him to draw...

"He has a gun!"
"Get down!"
"Run!"
The crowd scrambled and spun. A mother shielded her son.

But Tiffany would not be undone.

She ducked and she kicked, the gun flew and it flipped, then she caught it with her fist (since she refused to drop the gift). "Now I have the gun, son!" she exclaimed, waving both it and the Bear in his face.

Eventually the police came, wrote down every witness claim, recorded Tiffany's account of the day, arrested the man, and took him away.

After which, Tiffany paid and moseyed proudly on her merry way.

The End.

Original Teddy Bear Images processed by the DeepDream Generator.

This was inspired by a combination of three things:

  1. Stores already putting out Christmas decorations (it's the 21st of October).
  2. Videos of Black Friday crowds trampling their way into stores and actually fighting each other over discounted electronics.
  3. The tendency for stories to rhyme this time of year. ^_^;

I imagine those from thing-2 must have something to prove in their individual lives to come to blows over some toy or TV... or to even be there in the first place, especially with children.

Thus Tiffany was born, determined to acquire the approval of some brat-who-has-it-all in her life via the gifting of some stupid overpriced toy that's been sold out everywhere.

Thanks for reading!

Oh my, this is so timely! Great work with the rhyme and I have seen these ridiculous toys that the media tells kids they need!

Thank you. ^_^

I genuinely cannot think of anything worse than Black Friday sales. Unfortunately it seems to be catching on here in the U.K. 😫 Great poetry/story crossover!

Oh no! Not the UK too!
Well, suppose it was just a matter of time...
I wonder if it's spread to anywhere else...
(lol, "spread," like it's a virus or something)

Thanks, it was fun to write. ^_^
