Thunderstorms Late Today Mother's Day Weekend Sinking Fast
We will start off with weather conditions for today which have us in some cloud cover. Overnight low clouds and fog along the coast have been moving out but there are more clouds to the west. This is the next cold front beginning its march across Pennsylvania today. We can already see on the satellite below the bright wide cloud tops to the west and on the regional radar there is already a line of showers and possible thunderstorms developing to the west that will be approaching later today. The Storm Prediction Center has raised much of the area west of the coast to a slight risk of severe weather from these thunderstorms.
US SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
There are some lead showers that are starting to come into the range of the local radars but I think the main push will be late this afternoon and for the first part of tonight. Along the coast the marine layer and a south wind may effectively kill off any storms as the near the shoreline but we will watch and see how this plays as the day wears on.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Temperatures today inland should reach well into the 70s to some lower 80s in spots while along the coast with a south wind it will be in the 60s. The front should move through and Friday is looking like a good day with sunshine and highs in the upper 60s to some middle 70s.
MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND FORECAST
What started off as a warm weekend with a minimal amount of shower activity at first glance a week ago has evolved into something different for Mothers Day weekend. A warm front approaches Friday night into Saturday morning with a few showers. Then as that goes by a cold front will be dropping southward for Saturday evening with the threat for some showers and thunderstorms. Saturday's highs will be in the 70s to near 80 or so.
GFS FORECAST SUNDAY MAY 13,2018
The issue for Sunday is that the front stalls out to the south with weak waves on the front that will be moving through on Sunday. I don't necessarily think it rains all day but there will be on and off showers to deal with and temperatures will be in the 60s. Next week doesn't look especially promising either as we will see an increase moisture flow from the Atlantic and it could mean for a rather rainy week ahead of us.
