What happened to Baseball jerseys?

I didn’t realize that the consumer baseball jersey was expected by fans to be the same exact product as in professional use. This poses a huge problem. It’s not reasonable to try to concurrently optimize for these very divergent needs. So either the fans will be unhappy or the players will.

We all know this from our experience with regular clothes. Runway clothing (unless it’s just a mass-market trunk show) is never usable the way regular clothes are. It’s made for atypical bodies and atypical use. Even if you’ve never been a professional athlete, perhaps you’re tried to buy runway clothes or at least seems what they look like in editorial photos.

We laugh because we know it’s impractical.

So why would we think we want to wear the jersey of a real athlete? And why does Nike think it makes sense, in this conflict of the impossible, to make the Procrustes victim be the player instead of the viewer?
