Pffff... I really started to fall behind on this contest! However, I didn't forget... it really was on my list of things to do... except that list just kept getting longer and longer... but I'm getting there!
Thanks to everyone who replied back on the Small Confessions post... there were some interesting ones... but thankfully, nothing that required the intervention of the police!
This week, I'm thinking about the idea between emotional thinking and rational thinking... it's something that comes up quite often in music, there are people who "feel" and others who "think".... both versions have their merits, and weaknesses.... and it is something comes up in my own life as well... having had a "rational" background, but working in an "emotional" field!
My Question
- Are you more of an emotional person or a rational one?
- Which is more important?
My sample answer
Well... I would describe myself as quite a rational person... I really think I see things in terms of systems and balances, and I like to find logic and reason behind things...and to use those tools to solve problems. So, definitely, I am more rational minded than emotional....
Well, as far as the second question goes... It is a bit of a false dichotomy... of course, both aspects are necessary. With only rationality we wouldn't be human... and with only emotion, we would be creatures of instinct only... I do think that they are complementary though...
I guess I would describe rationality as the frame of mind needed to design systems and large scale rules governance... the sort of thing that drives efficiency and trust. ... and emotional thinking is the "wisdom" to see the exceptions to those rules. So, without each other, each type of thinking is limited and ultimately useless... however, they are also completely useless when applied outside of their sphere.
Hard to put my thoughts about that more clearly than that... it is a touch harder than I had thought!
Rules
- Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
- Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
- In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
- I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
- I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!
Steem Basic Income
One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!
With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!
Last week's winners
The last post paid out 0 SBD and 1.384 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.
The winners by random draw are:

I agree... emotion leads to impulsive and knee jerk responses to problems... it is good to be human and all of that, but sometimes it jumps us to the wrong conclusion... or an over-reaction.

I am rational. Perhaps because I am sober, like they say Dutch people are but it can also be a result of the Spartan way I am raised, the molesting and abusement.
Hard to say what is better. It too comes with it it is not good. Too emotional is a big burden for yourself but also the people around you. Being rational, seeing the things as they are is more my style. It means I no longer buy a bunch of excuses, do not count on and rule my own life. It saves me a lot of stress. By the way this does not mean I do not feel empathy for people. I think I am a realist. I wish you a great day. 💕

Ouch... that doesn't sound like a good past. However, yes... it does appear that the Dutch Protestant history has lent itself a bit towards the rational rather than emotional... at least in public!

I think I am varying degrees of both.
People are a combination of emotion and reason. If one can combine the two into a unified whole, that is a great thing. Unfortunately, so often people emphasize one or the other. They often become unbalanced in their behavior and others suffer as a result. I wish we could get back to being a unified whole, but I fear that the prevailing climate does not permit this.

I don't know... I think that people want to be a balanced whole.. but in a way "trying" to be a balance is not the same as "being" a balance. After all the balance is different in different people, and trying to be what you aren't is perhaps worse than disliking what you are...

Well u said it all! There really is nothing I can add to it Haha, I would say I'm the same. But sometimes my decisions I think I over think them too much to be rational then my emotions get to me 😂😂🤦♀️. So I try to just make the best of it and see how it plays out...
Like they say, if you always try your best then you will never fail.

I'am definitely more rational I first try to understand everything and how it works and what are the effects before taking action, but once that is done and I think I know what to do, I will let emotion in and see if that changes anything.

Being rational is more important as it makes you see the bigger picture. You can see things as it is with no feelings attached

I am the rational type. I am an accountant by training, experience and proclivity. All of my life people have asked me why I have no emotions or tell me I have no emotions. I am the type of person to see "what is" for what it is, make decisions and take action based on this.
Years ago I was involved in a lawsuit that seemed like it would go the way of my team. At one meeting we found out it would not and the whole thing was now over with bad results for us. As soon as this was announced, I said, "OK - let's plan the next steps in light of this new development." Twenty people were furious with me and wanted "time to mourn." Hmm... such productive use of time! So this is only one example, but I have many more.
Great question for this week :)

Hi Benji, nice post here... I think I'm more of a rational person, when I do things or make decisions, I barely even bring emotions into it, I try to be as real as possible. I know some very emotional people, they let emotions cloud their sense of judgement and sometimes, they end up hurting themselves. Like you mentioned, both are needed but I feel being rational is what we need today,we have a lot of problems to solve. Goodnight

Yes... I would wish that there were more rationality in the current world... there is too much initial knee jerk reaction and not enough thought and slow decision making... unfortunately, the way that that internet and instant communications are prevalent now really doesn't help things there...

I'm an emotional person. I used to take things that people say to heart a lot and would get easily offended but I'm getting better. That's why I would say it's me important to be rational. To me, that means being logical and trying to solve problems according to reason. With a clear head and logical thinking I think almost any problem can be solved in most situations. It gets unclear once emotions get involved say for example in ethical dilemmas

That's interesting that you describe yourself as one and would prefer the other! Definitely, being rational can help by not taking an immediate response or position and just taking your time to think (which I know can be also infuriating for others....)
With ethical dilemmas, I don't think it is possible to come to rational solutions... after all, there is not enough information normally in those cases to weigh the outcomes in a fair or objective way. For instance, what is the worth of one life compared to another? It is impossible to quantise that sort of thing...

That's the exact sort of example I was thinking about. Say for example that there are 5 people waiting for organ transplants. There is a compatible donor who is also sick but if he dies, may save the other five. Save one life and let the other five die or sacrifice the one to save five?

Hello.
2)Well for me the point is : Equilibruim between both. I think the world is moving by the logic and sometimes is just a feeling the only you need to do something, however we have the responsability to thing very well if that's decition affect to someone

Interesting question.
I'm an extremely emotional person (HSP is a blessing and a curse), but I developed a - just as extreme - rational way of life as a survival mechanism. To be able to cope with all feelings and emotions, I learned to (over) rationalize.
I think a good balance between the two is important. An emotional approach can lead to adventure and passion. A rational approach leads to efficiency. One can't go without the other. (If only I knew how to apply that knowledge, lol)

The trouble I guess is that everyone thinks the balance lies differently... Most of us do think we are generally balanced... but other people would look at us and likely disagree!

Yeah, I thought I was rational, but sometimes the emotional side of things take over. I can get pretty angry (about injustice and stupiditynostly, so I'm angry a lot at the moment!).
It's good to have a balance I think. Reacting emotionally all the time will lead to mistakes. Reacting without emotion and we might as well be robots

Obviously rational. Mr. Spock is an emotional mess compared to me.
Logically, reason is more important. Emotion has only some relative value in interpersonal relationships, while intellect is useful in all areas of life. &, seriously, look at human beings. Who would really want interpersonal relationships with them?
