I want to give an example from the perspective of virtual reality. I was very excited when I saw that the people who used the glasses were having trouble standing up. When I first used it, I lost balance and excitement. I get used to it all the time. This tool is great!

I work in research in a large hospital. We are soon to start a research project using virtual reality goggles to help patients in deep pain or during their end of life care.
The idea is that using VR, these patients can experience reduced stress and anxiety during a very difficult time. The goggles go on and they are transported to where ever they want, experiencing a peaceful and relaxing time, away from the daily suffering they are in.
VR can do so much in so many ways.

I believe VR is a fad. Honestly, I've seen 3D come-and-go a few times and I'm disappointed. I love 3D movies, but it's only a small niche market so it's survival is not ideal. I even got to watch a College Football game in 3D... that was pretty thrilling. However, again, it's just a small corner cupboard compared to the whole house; and the cost to make them is higher, so it's not a trend that's likely to continue. VR, too, is just a small niche market and it's survival is not guaranteed. I don't believe that it's a strong enough "cool, gadget-y, geek-driven" technology to overcome the lack of knowledge/experience/interest.
Therefore, I reiterate, VR is going to go the way of the Dinosaurs and there will just be small remnants remaining at the end.
