WOC and Trans Author Book Review Contest results

in contest •  7 years ago

Friends, I'm kinda disheartened. I didn't expect an avalanche of reviews for this contest, but I expected more than 2, especially given the two week period. We are at a time when so much of the very best science fiction and fantasy is written by woc, trans folks, and trans poc. One of the novels on my Hugo ballot this year was written by a non binary woc (It's called AN UNKINDNESS OF GHOSTS, and it's amazing).

But while the response has been disheartening, I did very much enjoy reading the two reviews that were submitted.

While both posts were great, to my mind, @beautifulbullies's review was the clear winner. It went in depth, explained both the merits and issues of the story, and was particularly impressive as the writer's first review. @beautifulbullies wins the 10 SBD bounty.

I'm still figuring out my next contest. Hopefully, it'll have more success!

I didn't even have a single idea about this @didic... Please, for contests, feel free to tag @everyone at @steemsugars, otherwise we/I definitely will miss stuff !! To the next one deary !!! :*

I think that post was before I joined @steemsugars, but I'll do that for the next one, coming later today.

Sorry, things have been super hectic around my way, and most of my recent reading has been non-fiction. But if you ever do this again in the future, I'll get my copies of Octavia's Brood and Amok: An Anthology of Asia-Pacific Speculative Fiction, and see if I can't get something together for it.

That anthology may be highly relevant to my next contest.

I'm late, but I'm here! Book Review: All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders.

This book was a blast to read and a challenge to review, but I enjoyed the entire experience more than I can put into words. Thank you for pushing me outside my comfort zone and opening up a new corner of my literary world.

Sorry, I failed you! I didn't get around to it...I have several possibilities I'm aware of but I realized I'd need to re-read them to say anything of interest, let alone remember what the heck happened...maybe you can try it again and keep the present entries in a few weeks? or whenever? I had good intentions, but...life :-)

Okay, now I'm feeling bad for making people feel bad. This one's over. It may return at some point. But the next one's coming soon!

No I feel bad!
Just kidding. We're all just doing our best, right? No worries.
Thanks for trying to give us a good opportunity! I didn't write it up, but I read lots of books by WOC last year from a list I found and they were all great. I tend to favor magic, mystery, fantasy types of things... I just came across this title the other day that I can't wait to read:
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
It's technically for young adults, but it sounds good. The description says: "Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut."

You... may have heard about it in my New Books Tuesday post :)

Actually, I think it was an interview on NPR with the author because I was definitely in my car - I pulled over to make a note. But now I feel sheepish for missing your post! I'm always on the lookout for good books and I have a running list on audible and at my local library, so I guess I better be more diligent about keeping up with New Books Tuesday. Cheers!

Noooooo! I keep making you feel bad and I super don't mean to!

no worries! We're good :-)

Oh darn it. I really wish I had done or promoted this. I'm terrible when it comes to reviews.

Oh damn yeah I took the wrong couple weeks to be off of Steemit. I was pretty well offline actually traveling a ton. But imma try to pay better attention and hopefully participate in something in the future. So glad you held this though!

I am so sorry I've been unable to participate in your contests in the time I've known you :(. My reading is just not lining up very well, I'm sorry to say.

I have zero ill will or resentment for any specific person who couldn't participate for whatever reason. It's the overall response that had me miffed. I fully understand people have lives and stuff!

Oh good! I also would have expected a higher response rate, it's a fabulous contest!
