Hello all my friends and followers! Over the last couple weeks I have gained quite a few new followers, and I have been thrilled to meet and talk with so many new people! We really have a special platform here, and I have so many examples of that in my memories and on my feed; if you are new here, you don't just have to take my word for it, let's make some new ones now!
Doing creative, fun things that otherwise would be outside of our comfort zones, collaborating and competing, sharing and caring, building and creating, all these are things that I love about the community that I have met around steem. It seems that every new tag that I dive into, I am finding communities budding, developing, collaborating, enjoying, sharing and loving what they are doing. There are so many more initiatives now that before, it just keeps getting better and wider!
Now, throughout my Steem journey, I have been helped and supported by so many great users, and in fact still to this day I try to make it back around to friends that I met from earlier days on this platform. I also try to give back, I try to 'pay it forward' to my current followers and friends, as well as newer users who are just trying to get integrated here.
I like to reward the best, most thoughtful, funniest, most caring, most adjective comments that I receive on my posts! I haven't really advertised it, but if you read carefully all of my posts, you will notice that I do mention it occasionally. This time I went back more than 2 months of posts, all the way back to the results of my homestead caption contest, and found 28 of my favorite comments from that period, or should I say that I picked my favorite comments and it turned out there were 28. You'll notice that three users got more than one rewarded comment!
The winners are:
@itravelarts @quillfire @janton @cecicastor @phoenixwren @coinsandchains @mariannewest @jaichai @sugarcreek @deadgrlsuppastar @headchange @lyndsaybowes @whatisnew @hobotang @samic @canadianrenegade @buckaroo @eroche @thekittygirl @eveningart @maverickinvictus @quochuy
Now I have interacted with a lot of you in some very engaging comments, but these are only on my posts, not on your posts, and since I make the arbitrary rules here, that's the way it is!
So anyways....this is the official beta period of what I am going to call Small Fish Games. That name is also in beta, so if I find that the tag is being used or anybody thinks of a better idea (including me) I might change it. But the idea is the following:
I am going to continue to work on different projects that relate to steem in different ways. I have had success here and have developed different strategies. I like rewarding users who engage and do good stuff. Now I want to have a long form contest where new users (and anybody!) can play around having fun on steem like I do. If I have to work more on one aspect, and I may not be able to comment as much as I like, I might send the competitors to comment in a certain tag that week for a chance to win a prize. Or other things that I think of, I have lots of great ideas already.
For this first week I do have some homework for any interested participants:
Week 1 Homework
Express your intent to participate in a comment, let me know how long you have been on steem, what is your experience so far, what have you tried, what has worked, what hasn't worked.
Register in Asher's Engagement League if you haven't already.
Prizes
I will use three forms of prizes, and maybe more if I think of them. They are:
Delegated SP - This week there will be a 100 delegated SP prize (length too be determined, but probably several weeks at least)
SBI shares - I love these things!
@treeplanter upvotes - Trees are good. The best even!
I have to run now, I am accepting entries, comments, suggestions, clarification, notification, queries, confused looks and complaints in the comments section!
Love and LIght!
I wish I had half the energy that you do! It is probably due to the fact I am double your age!) I was really gung-ho when I started, now I find due to other commitments I have less time and energy to do the things I did do before. I still love the engagement and I wish I had more time to devote to making quality content every day. When I come up with a solution for this problem, I will let every know what the secret is! LOL

I've been on Steem since late February. I'm hooked, it's addictive and I've since slowed down so much on other social platforms. But I think I need to start going back there to promote Steem to the others.
So far on Steem, my most profitable kind of posts are development (programming) for @utopian-io. I then discovered @ulog and I'm trying to commit to post a daily ulog talking about everything I do that includes in real life but also here as a Steem witness.
Engagement is something I'm trying to improve, so thanks for doing all these.

Aw- thank you so much for the gift- that was a really lovely surprise and gave me the biggest smile when the notification of your post popped up. And yes please, I'd love to join in with your small fish games :) I'm already over at Asher's place, loving what he's up to each week - so that's that bit covered.
I have been here since the 15th June, so yesterday was my 2 month mark here on Steemit. I was lucky enough to be scooped into the madcap loving embrace of the @welcomewagon early on and they pretty much made sure that I found my feet and met lots of gorgeous people. They are my highlight, and I love scouting around for new newbies for them to scoop up now as their unofficial WW Spy :)
Then I have to mention PYPT- the first Discord chat I ever joined in- and I quickly found a second home over at The Ramble and love listening in to the wonderful shows there.
I got a lot of pleasure from the Curie Comment Challenge last week- and also love the C2 community and the wonderful curation community they have surrounding them.
Ultimately, I've loved getting to know the people that make this place feel like home- writing posts, writing and responding to comments, reading so much fab content... I've even played with video (something I swore I'd never do!!)
All in all? Bloomin' brilliant! Thank you for asking :)

I left you a pretty detailed response comment yesterday but that was on someone else's post so probably not it.
Alright I arrived in March just before my birthday,(I discovered I share a birthday with the platform. Thought that was a good sign. There is a SMT release scheduled for my birthday this year. An even better omen?)
Anyway, I assume anything that hasn't worked is because of my own lack of working it. Probably on that score I would say dodging a delegation and also dodging numerous newbie nickles was not the smartest move. My reasoning at the time was it seemed unfair to take from projects designed to help newbies grow. I was still looking around unsure of my commitment to stay.
To turn that around those have also been some of the most helpful things once I decided to commit.Community involvement is a must for me. Most people I interact with on a regular basis share more than one community in common. Also the engagement league but that one can be a huge time commitment in order to place well.
And for a really fast answer. For me the platform feed is useless (cleanup is on the todo list) On the other hand Ginabot is a lifesaver. Combined with Steamworld that just transforms the whole experience.

I would say, not being on Discord. It seems everyone makes their friends and groups there, instead of here. For most of my time on Steemit, I worked on a Kindle alone, and Kindle, though technically an Android, doesn't use the Google Play store, but a native Amazon store, and Discord wasn't available there. Only recently have I gotten a smartphone and a laptop. So I could do it now, but ...eh, I don't know. I haven't been chat-room-y since AOL and IRC days. I'm not sure if I have the energy to split my focus even more.

Hm! That is interesting! I also was resistant, and now being there, I can attest that there are a lot of people that spend a lot of energy there! But GINA bot alone is worth it to me to be on discord, she notifies me of anything I want her to, for me it is mentions, replies and wallet movement.

Aha! So she is your madrina so to speak! That is very interesting! I definitely use steemnow the most, also GINAbot on discord. I will check steemd and steemworld and steemreports for specific things. Now I was to make some of my own tools! I made one last year but I let the hosting expire, need to get my act together....
There are so many cool dapps! I do like letseat, I hope it gets an update soon with my recommendations in mind. I haven't been able to get actifit to work in a way that actually makes sense to me, seems I need to leave the app open, because when I do other things with my phone (which I do!), it doesn't work. It may have been updated since, let me know when it is awesome and I will try again!
So with your extensive contest experience, what are some of the things that I should consider doing in the small fish games?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

This looks like fun. I'll bite. :-)
I'm already in the Engagement leagues - and while I'm not a big fish, I've been ranking in the comments tables. :-D
I've been on Steemit since Christmas Eve Eve 2017, so nearly 8 months now. It's been fun - a big struggle at the beginning just to work out "how to play" but it really kicked off about three months in when I finally joined Discord (with an invite to Asapers - where I now curate) and started meeting more people, garnering more support, started sharing my stories and obtained my first @curie. (I now have scored four of these - all for my writing!)
What has worked - being genuine and sharing the things that matter to me. (Steemit isn't for niches, it's for people.)
What hasn't worked... I've learned from others, really... but my observations tell me that:
One of my recent (pleasant) surprises was when I put together my first music foray - comparing 6 different songs, the original plus 5 (sometimes 6) different covers and parodies. Not only was it fun and well received, but I another (curie-backed) account supported me for a great payout (not curie level, but sort of a mini-curie...)
Since then, I've done 1-2 per week, greatly enhancing my own musical knowledge and hopefully the enjoyment of others!
Lol - I'd better shut up now. (Can you tell that I'm a writer?!)
BTW - I love @treeplanter - and always buy one for my posts now. Such an awesome project. Yeah, and I love SBI too - that's also how I got involved with more curation for his Daily Sneak.

Wonderful! Happy to have you, have seen you on the daily sneak and creeping up in the engagement leagues! The curie backed account you mentioned, is that @c-squared? I really love that initiative! There are so many good projects going on, I love to share them because we cannot know them all!
So you are a writer! What sort of stuff were you writing about before you found your way to steem?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Thanks for your lovely reply.
I've been upvoted a couple times by @c-squared, but it was @illuminati-inc that really hits me occasionally with some great votes on my musical forays. They hit it the first time I did one and it really encouraged me to do more - which are great fun! @esteemapp adds great support from time to time as well.
Actually, I've been working on A'mara Books for a very long time. I started self-publishing the first books back in 2014, but got tied down with life... But now, I'm remarried, so I can focus more on my writing - plus with a great place to put it where I get real support, it's much easier to keep adding another 1500-2000 words every day to keep up with the rate of sharing. Some of the basic stories have been hanging around over a decade now! Others are developing from scratch at this very moment (well, once I catch up here, anyway.) I (mostly) finished one up yesterday - including that elusive title. But I'll share about that for tomorrow's update post.

Oh yeah I have seen @illuminati-inc around in the music scene! Great stuff!
I think it is really cool where steem can work into what we already do/dream of doing in our lives! This is the best use of steem.
Would you consider yourself successful on steem so far?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I really appreciate that those guys are able to reward people like myself who aren't producing the music, but enjoying it and wanting to help share it. (I'd love to produce it too, but that requires extra people with the talents that I don't have... That's another story entirely.)
Yes, I consider myself a successful part of steem. I'm not making loads of money, but I haven't made any in self-publishing by myself (I'm terrible at marketing!) - so everything I make here (even if it's just going back into my account still) is better than I've made separately.
Success goes beyond money too. The fact that I have a load of followers, some of whom must have me on autovote already and people who check in daily (or weekly, whenever) on my writing is huge.
Then there's the fact that I can name a bunch of different accounts where I've interacted with them enough to call them one of my friends. I can tell you things about them and have feelings about their attitudes and projects. When I can go through my list of witnesses (so far, I still have 13 votes left to bestow, I think it stands...) and tell you why I follow at least half of them. I just goes to the whole value of the whole platform.
Someone else said this, and it's very true: I came for the money, but stayed for the community. The same names pop up all over the place. These are the people who make the community. (And yes, sometimes that community comes with drama, lol.)
I've written an entire interview here...
Feel free to use it like that if you have use for it.

sir ecoinstant! of course not silly. I've been a smashing success since the moment I started! lol! It has literally been increasing everyday. Well in the first month it was more like an increase every week..and you had to look for it because it was small. But after that it was noticeable in small ways everyday.
It helped that from day one I had several members who contacted me because they had also joined that day and we kept supporting each other and they are still growing as I am so it helps if you can start with a core group even if it's just 2 or 3 others. we all ain't as popular as ecoin.

My entry
I have been on Steem 329 days. So far 95% of my time here has been wonderful. I have met people that enjoy my creative side and have offered so much encouragement to me to keep on experimenting with new idea's.
What has worked for me on Steemit is just being ME. Write things I want to write about, projects I am interested in, do things I love and that make me happy or smile. What has not worked are when I try and force out a story, song, video because I think I need to post something that day but really don't feel any inspiration for the post that got written. It shows up in no comments and in how lackluster the posts read the next day. So ALWAYS be YOU!

Well that seems very interesting! I want too be a alpha tester but I'll have to read it twice more just to figure out what they are doing!

It sucks, because I was thinking about something similar yesterday. I was thinking it would be awesome to pull the best features from all of these dApps and put them into one app.
On Teelkee, the best I can tell, they are shooting for a modular platform to create a SMT style community/app and an associated token. Basically a wordpress for the social token world.

Yeah, and it seems like 'experts' are going to play a role, and I'm not sure how that fits into the wordpress analogy. But an smt creation platform is a brilliant idea.

I have found so much to like in the past week. I have been on steemit for over a year but in the past few days i have discovered so much more. Just before this post i had coincidentally subscribed to Asher's engagement league.
When I start out on the site i was posting multiple times a week and lucky to earn 1c and get two comments on any given post until i realised that this was a pointless excercise. After that I joined a few SBD contests and earned enough to have a vote.
From there i started working my way through the site, commenting interacting and building a small but interesting following. That was where i realized how to operate on here properly. Get involved with the right people and do what you love. If you combine those two you will go places.
I love the vision that some of the users here have to drive participation and i would love to be part of your project as well. Whatever shape you decide to deliver it in. Thanks.

Thank you for being open to my experimentation! If you don't mind I will ask you some questions!
Do you use any tools while steeming? Things like steemnow.com is what I am referring to. What is your steem dream?
Nice to meet you!

I'm always open to experimentation. Thats how i ended up here in the first place.
I do use a couple, but the main tool that i use would be steemworld. I think that it has a much better interface than steemnow and has so much information that you can see everything that is happening with your account.
I'm still here because i think the blockchain has a big future. I hate the main social sites and see what is happening here as a new stage in the evolution of online interaction. All the apps that are coming online offer a new way to use the internet.

Steem world is a great tool!
What would you say is the best post you have ever written? Do you have a specific niche for posting?

It's definitely my favorite tool for measurement out of all the options. I just find it so handy to browse through my statistics and any activity for my account.
I don't really have a niche for posting and in the summer my activity level dropped off a long way. I just have a lot more time that i can use in the winter compared to now when i have multiple time constraints tieing me up.
I would spend a lot more time commenting than i would with my own posts but when i do post it tends to be about what has caught my attention over the past few days. How steemit is performing, what is happening at the moment or anything else that arouses my curiosity. I spend a good bit of time browsing through posts so i do tend to pick up on certain trends or news as i go.

I'm curious to participate!
Let me see, I heard of Steemit a while back when they first launched (I had an interest in crypto) but I dismissed it (and am kicking myself), as I'm not really a social media fan, and I had never written anything online before. However, when I did join in December 2017 I bounced off it for a couple of months. Partly because I didn't really what to do, also I was with extended family at the time and also there was a serious case of reward envy!
However, when I restarted again, I found some engaging, supportive and interesting communities that I started to be part of. That was what was missing in my initial Steemit foray.
Since then, I've been slowly trying to build up some interest (via @classical-radio) in the Classical-Music tag (@classical-music with @remlaps being the founder), but it's pretty tough going... Classical music lovers are not really a tech savvy bunch, so Steemit isn't really a natural fit!
I've found that posting some of my performances (audio recorded) hasn't really worked very well. As a professional musician, I can't post a recording that isn't of a certain quality without some possible consequences, and most of my music requires more than a single person, and it is not possible to ask colleagues to play for free for my Steemit profile!
What I have found works, is engagement, interacting with others via Discord and Steemit, and then just writing posts about things that interest me... from short posts of roughly 2 minute reads, or longer posts of more depth!
What I enjoy about Steemit is the relative anonimity, which just gives me the freedom and confidence to just write. I've found writing to be a calming and interesting experience, something I've not really done since school! My wife calls Steemit my "dear diary...".

Dear Diary! Very interesting Benjy, I have enjoyed some of your content in the past, happy to have you on board!
So you remain anonymous...interesting, is there anything that you cannot do that you would want to do, but don't, in order to remain anonymous?
What tools do you use for steem? Do you ever use something like steemnow.com?
Thanks for joining!

Well, it is only pseudo anonymous! If anyone wanted to, I could easily be identified! After all, I do post photos with my kids and wife, so people I know would recognise them! But it is a nice veneer of a veil that just isn't there on other platforms!
At the moment, I'm happy not posting anything with me in it! I'm not doing things like openmic or anything like that as it isn't really suited to a violinist without a backing track...
Tools for Steem... I juggle a few accounts (orchestral and community and an alt), so I end up using mspsteem, steemit, busy and esteem with one account on each Condenser instance. That way I don't have to log out!
I've taken to posting via a WordPress blog for most of the time, so I use the Steempress plugin on those. Other than those, steemworld, SteemAuto, steembottracker.com (mostly for delegating now) and Discord, Discord and Discord!

Ah ha! A great list of tools there! I have used the condenser/multiple account trick as well!
How easy is it to get a steempress upvote? I have't tried it yet because I pulled down all my other sites a few months before steempress was announced, but I could spin one up without too much work...
What would you do differently if steem went to 100 dollars?

Not sure about the steempress upvotes. I hopped on near the start (not the beginning though). At that stage, it seemed like there was manual curation, as different posts seemed to attract varying vote percentages. Now, it appears to be a white list of something. I seem to get the same upvote regardless of the type of post, long or short.
Phew, if Steem went up to 100 dollars (or 80 euro, makes it easier for me to think about), and I was pulling in a similar amount of Steem per day... I'm not sure I would do much differently! Having around 1-2 liquid Steem per post each day would be nice supplement to my real life job! It might entice me to write longer form posts... Or maybe move to 2 posts a day?

Its pretty exciting to be in the early days of all of these dapps, getting involved early has a lot of advantages. I try to think about steem at a high price now when I earn steem, it changes my incentives quite a bit!
I am working now on the next update to Smallfishgames, I might be a little late! How has your discussion contest been going? Sorry I haven't been able to make it over there for about two weeks....

For these times, and just in general we should think of the tokens/cons rather than translating back to fiat. I really learnt my lesson when doing trading, tokens are more important than the first value. I lost a chunk of ETH and I regret that a bit!
The discussion propt contest is going well! It attracts a few comments, which keeps me busy with replies. It is always interesting to see the responses, and I like trying to think of new things to ask that might spark a bit of introspection!

Thanks for the mention! We're glad to hear that you enjoyed one of our comments. We try our best to have meaningful interactions here on Steemit! Our apologies for missing this post before the payout window. We're having trouble keeping up with everything now that we're finally starting to make some headway with the homestead. Cheers, Aimee

Cheers! Don't worry, I miss things all the time but I actually do go back to old blog posts like this one and catch up! Keep up the good work on the homestead, thats the great thing about steem that when I make it around to your blog again I can go through all the great updates!
I really enjoyed one of your climate change videos about weather modification. Would like to watch that whole series when I get some time....c;
