So, it's time to judge my contest for art based on my story, "My Vacation on the Exotic Shores of a Black Hole".
There were some awesome entries. I would like to thank everyone who entered!
You can see the original art contest post here.
You can see the post extending the art contest here.
To read the story, you can click on the coresponding parts below.
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13
A few are normal chapter length, while others are a bit shorter.
It was very difficult judging which entries would win, but unfortunately, it has to be done.
The Honorable Mentions
There were plenty of awesome entries. Some of these were serious contenders for 2nd or 3rd prize. They're all awesome in their own ways.
In no particular order,
@penderis
https://steemit.com/art/@penderis/fanart-for-geekpowered-on-the-exotic-shores-of-a-black-hole
@alecreed
@matytan
@nostone-unturned
@wolv
For the 3rd Prize
@rngdz's artistic representation of the black hole!

For the 2nd Prize
This was likely the hardest one to judge. So many of the pieces of art were so well deserving! But in the end, only one can win each prize.
@lucidlight for the depiction of a dimensional fracture!
https://steemit.com/contest/@lucidlight/dimensional-fracture
And finally...
For the 1st prize!
@wolv for the depiction of Robert the robot, who clearly does something, but all we see is him fetch food.

I wish I had gotten more entries, but I am really proud of those that did enter, and I think it was a true competition for the winners. It was a very hard decision for myself. It was a lot harder than I expected.
I have avoided saying why each won, as I didn't want to risk offending anyone. Every one of them had their own awesome style though, and artistic representation.
I will be sending the Steem prizes as soon as I post this.
Edit: Okay, the Steem should all be sent out now.

Wow! I won! Absolutely amazing, thank you very much!
I'm happy to see there was such amazing competition. Still a shame I procrastinated to much and didn't draw John... as he wasn't explicitly described as a human yet (though strongly implied he was). I was going to try to get away with probably a blue-ish humanoid.
With all the developments going on in the story I hope you'll try again (maybe to celebrate the 25th chapter if you get there :P )

Yeah, he's human. Though whether or not he is partially genetically engineered I have yet to decide.
Ooh! A bluish John! Interesting. Almost like toilet water... :P
I'm not likely to do another art contest until after this story ends. I do intend to continue on with the characters however.

I figures, my idea to get away with it was, as he clearly is from earth, either him being an alien that settled on earth, a mutant or a genetically engineered/modified human.
Haha something like that. I only had a hard time picturing him, as in my mind he'd be someone slightly slacking on his looks and quite laid back (that's how I pictured him in the first 3 paragraphs of the story and it just never went away).
But I have the feel that that might be quite off... as he loves his showers so I assume he'd look quite clean most of the time. And he is a hardworker... so probably not as laid back as I pictured him...
So instead of a greasy american trucker maybe I should be thinking more of a Han Solo type. But ah well I'll wait for the story to continue see what it brings :)
And fair enough, I'd still be looking forward to the next contest whenever it might be.

Well, if hollywood cast him, he would probably be played by Chris Pratt. Of course, so would Julia, and Robert. :P
Right now as I write him I imagine him as a nondescript guy that looks to be in his late 20's or early 30's, scruffy face, probably rarely shaved, but not intentionally growing a beard, and shortish hair. He's probably about average weight, with maybe a bit more muscle due to the exo-suit constantly working them out. Probably not trim or buff, but muscular.
So, basically, if I were to describe him, he'd probably look a lot like a lot of people. But there is literally no way to sneak in a description of him, except for extremely slowly. It's a story told by him. In real life one does not go "I'm a tall blonde, with big muscles, and great abs!" That's only in bad erotica.
But you're right in that he's quite laid back. He loves his showers, because it's a chance for him to relax. He'll turn off the alarms and go watch a movie of the recreation of the impact into his own ship. He'll also go to bed without taking off his boots sometimes.
He is a contradiction though. He often works really hard. He'll go without real meals while working, eating energy bars to keep him going. He doesn't go along with a schedule. He works as long as he can and then grabs a beer or a nap.
He probably is a Han Solo type, but for now, less smuggling, and more just trying to get to the next day, and not go insane.

Haha Chriss Pratt would be an amazing Julia!
It is indeed harder to describe how a person looks when the story is told by him indeed, I noticed that too when I wrote the story for my a self portrait in death short story.
But you always have mirrors and Julia to help ("john... you could use a shave...) with those and of course that what might or might not be a future self (describing the chances he sees "Damn I got fat, and where is my black hair... what is this gray bald nonsens" haha)
Han Solo played by Chris Pratt. Yes I could picture him like that :P and well technically he might still be smuggling plenty with the unmapped crates but I understand that that is far from his priority right now. haha

I would actually totally watch a movie with Han Solo played by Chris Pratt. :P
I don't know that there's an actor that I know of that really portrays what I picture him as though. Chris Pratt probably in all actuality isn't that far off. Maybe if you left in a few of the things that would normally be considered out takes.

This is awesome dude, it must be pretty cool to see people interpreting your art in their own way?

Yeah, it was.
What ended up the first prize was shockingly similar to how I first imagined Robert to look, though he's considerably taller, and his "treads" are magnetic, rather than mechanical. Similar to how maglevs work.
