The original posting for the idea can be found here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@happyme/100-sbd-give-away.

This week's contest will require entrants to explain how they discovered Steem and what they think now that they are part of this community.

My story goes like this:

When Bitcoin first came out, I was very interested in becoming a miner and earning Bitcoin that way. I figured that since I left my computer running 24/7 anyway, I may as well earn something from it. But then my cautious side haunted me with thoughts like, how do I know they won't abduct my comuter files by installing some sort of virus along with the software for running the Bitcoin Miner? What if my hard drive fills up with all the data I'll be required to process? What if processing all that data uses up all my CPU power and it slows my computer down so much that I can't effectively use it any longer? Since I knew practically nothing about this sort of thing, I abandonned the idea and soon forgot about it all together. By the time I heard about Bitcoin again, it was far too expensive to start mining and the price of bitcoin had soared. I missed the boat on that one!

Then someone I met at the off-leash dog park befriended me and began forwarding me e-mails from the Dollarvigilante. In one of his promotional e-mails, the Dollarvigilante mentioned something about a new social media site that was also a cryptocurrency and paid you to post. That caught my attention and I just had to investigate! The landing page of steemit.com didn't offer up much about what I would find inside, so I joined up to find out more.

What I discovered was a group of people who seemed passionate about the site, who cared about one another and who had intelligent things to say. I was hooked big time! All I can think about and talk about is how can I contribute to make the site just a little bit better. What can I do that will make the next new member's life just a little bit easier? The learning curve is steep and there are still many things for me to discover and I'm having a ball.

Thanks, Dollarvigilante, for introducing me to Steemit!

I heard about steemit after working on technical stuff for 5 days straight trying to get cryptomining to work on my computer, after joining I immediately found a guide to mining in the new section that solved my issue entirely. steemit is awesome

Hello @happyme !

I found Steemit, by his cryptocurrency STEEM, because before I bought and sold bitcoins with my national currency. Later i found, is much better doing trading with another cryptocurrencies (that´s was when de ETF of bitcoins was rejected) and i found Poloniex.

So without much information about trading, began to do it. By bought Shadow Cash without know nothing about it, i lost 50$, i am from a country where each dollar is so much valuable ... So later of this i began to study each coin where i put my money, one of this coins was STEEM. I studied his project behind this and I liked it so much that I joined right away, even so bought and sum of STEEM to invest in it.

And now here I am. I think Steemit is a great community where you can learn about everything and so nice. This is my prefer social network.

Regards!

Welcome to Steemit and thanks for your entry into my contest.

Hello, I've just very recently gotten into cryptocurrency. As in just this year. I had just sold my food truck after 2 years of making sandwiches and have been trying to start a project with my brother. He is the one who has shown me the steem ropes so far. I am very excited to say that in just over one week, we will be launching the cryptocrusade in Portland Or. It will be a real life treasure hunt for a wallet with ether in it. We've spent the last 2 months designing this quest and getting the clues just right. So I am hoping it will fun for all involved. We will make an announcement when everything goes live in the next couple of days. Our hope is that this will spread all over the world as other crusaders join in.
I've only been on steemit for 2 days so far but it has proven to be an outstanding forum for information and positivity . I am really excited to spread the word and see where it will take me.

Thanks for your comments!
Hopefully you will encourage the winner to trade their Ether for Steem! There are some brilliant people on here.
This is only my 4th week here and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself.

Thank you @happyme and @sykochica for the opportunity in this contest.

Steemit was introduced to me recently by a friend I have known my whole life @onlyoneman. At first I didn't feel like it was a right fit for me. I am generally not a fan of social networks like facebook and twitter. I have had a facebook account for years but have only posted once and commented like twice. There are too many people on these sites just looking to bring others down. After looking into Steemit some I seen I was wrong.

There are so many people on here that are just looking to help everyone else out. People like @papa-pepper who recently gave 500 steem, I believe, to a member of the community who was having financial trouble from health issues. People like @happyme who create contests like this to enable newbies like myself to become more active in the community. These are just a few examples of a community with a high portion of people like them.

I was talking with @onlyoneman earlier today about corruption in the world today. Most places you go and platforms you look at, corruption is the first thing you see. Steemit is the opposite. I am sure there is some corruption here but it isn't the more prevalent aspect of the community. The first thing I witnessed was a community working together to bring others up, to share information and ideas. In my opinion this is the ideal community. A community that allows people like me to meet and connect with others in the public realm that I normally would not have on other platforms. And there is also the money, money is nice too.

Hello Lokii,

For some reason your comments really resonated with me. I'll have to look at your blog page and see what kinds of things you post about.

Thanks for participating in my contest!

My brother @blackvapor introduced me to steemit. He has been a stemian for a while. I am in the investment/finance industry and heard about different crypto currency. I am also a registered libertarian for over 25 years, long before it was popular.

He could not fathom why I didn't join steemit. Like a lot of people, the reason was Life! I am also a City Council Member (Vice Mayor), own a restaurant and have two teenage daughters @stevonic is my youngest.

No time for social media, I have the traditional accounts, but never use them. However, I have found this community to be wholly different than other platforms. You are able to make it what you choose.

I am now a proud member of steemit and will recruit more.

Welcome to Steemit!
Yes, life can get in the way. I know how much I struggle to complete all the tasks I assign to myself. Better busy than bored though (in my humble opinion)!
Thanks for participating!

While browsing 8ch.net/pol/ I discovered a thread that pointed to this Steemit post by @theshadowbrokers. This was the day when they released those stolen NSA files that included several exploits that powered the infamous WannaCry malware. Although these exploits were interesting to browse, I was more intrigued by the website on which they were announced, which is of course our beloved Steemit. The "upvote" counter caught my sight as it had a $ sign next to it. What could this possibly mean? At first I thought that this website allows people to tip the authors, but after doing some digging I finally understood that Steemit was just a front-end of a very powerful blockchain. Being a chain-n00b at that point, I thought it was just another scam that promised money from nothing, but after doing even more research, I decided that no, it isn't a scam and plus, what do I have to lose? I finally registered and started posting. My first few posts didn't accumulate more than 5 cents, so I gave up on posting. It was after I started becoming actually active in the community, talking to people in the comments and upvoting other people's posts, I started gaining at least some cash. I recently achieved 50 followers, for which I am very grateful!

Thanks for your entry, and congratulations on the milestone!
Free money??? It just HAS to be a scam, right?
Seems legit enough for me to get all excited about it. I think this will change how we view the Internet.

🍒 Thank you @happyme and @sykochica, I'm really happy for winning this 5 SBD 😊, I promise to use it well.

I'm happy for you too! I studied your blog page and can see that you are working hard at making Steemit the wonderful community it is. You have taken the time to learn the ropes and I'm quite certain you will do well here and be able to one day fulfill your dreams.

Congratulations again and feel free to enter my future contests.

That's a great idea! Upvoted and followed!

I first heard Maneco64 on YouTube say he was trying out some kinda crazy money-making social Steem-thing. Well, I'm thinking, that's obviously nuts ('cause you know the info never takes the first time). Eventually, I came across Jeff the Dollar Vigilante saying he made a million bucks on his first post (okay, $15,000, but the point was made). Maybe, just maybe this misspelled Steem-thing is something to look into. (Yeah, I came for the money.) But what gave me particular hope was the matter of content: no content, no Steem.
You mean, you guys want words? I can do words. Words and I are old friends.
Even better, an inviting place to get all these crazy ideas out of my notebooks with real-time feedback--sounds about like something I've been looking for my whole life.
But wait: there's more. As I poked around the Steem-i-verse a bit, I saw posters alluding to larger social transformations (or at least social media business modeling) hard-coded into Steem. Now what I'm seeing is something like this: what the money does is create much of the inherent incentive towards continual self-improvement (kaizen) of any entrepreneurial undertaking: it makes you give the best value in order to receive same. So what I witness here is noticeably more positivity than trolling, more encouragement than disparagement. Why? Because we're all invested in creating the personable, companionable atmosphere necessary for a thriving community. ("Don't open a shop unless you like to smile," right?) Likewise, the (polite) competition for eyeballs means folks work to post engaging, well-crafted material, meaning the content also seems qualitatively better. Better conversations over better material, with a payout at the end...maybe Maneco64 wasn't so nuts after all.

Great story! Short and to the point, yet interesting to read. Nice entry!

Well my story starts in 2009 and I bought physical gold after having zero knowledge about the markets. Something in my gut told me to buy it. It's the weirdest thing too because I was never raised to believe gold has value. I even convinced my father to get some as well. He then got me into silver where i lost 70% value on. My gold went up up up until it got slammed. I dabbled in the onion network as I knew something was very wrong with the economy. I saw bitcoin on the silk road, but I had none and didn't know how to get it. So I clicked some ads and eventually got 0.5 BTC. I then saw in 2013 the price of gold get absolutely slammed! I couldn't understand why considering the Fed fixed absolutely nothing. I then learned about the incredible manipulation and corruption in the markets. I became depressed. I even gambled what little BtC i had (because I didn't know what to do with it). I then followed pundits on the internet. That's about 1 month ago. We have all seen the rise of crypto, but I still don't have an exchange to go to in Canada. So here I am. My only cryptocurrency is Steem
and I'm only collecting it and storing it as SP rather then figure out how I can consume back into a sick fiat currency. Be well and thanks for the opportunity

Oh... Another good story! I like this contest topic. Such interesting stuff to read.

BTW, I spent a whole day trying to find the BEST way to buy Steem in Canada and it seems the exchange that came out at the top of my list is https://www.quadrigacx.com (they are on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, BC) but opening an account there and funding it is a pain. Then by the time I was ready to commit to an exchange, the price of Steem went to $2.40 USD and I decided it was too high for me to get in now with the little bit of cash that I had, so may as well just keep collecting it here slowly. If it ever goes back down below $1 USD, I'm in like flint.

one exchange.. ughhh hopefully something else will come up once I am ready to cash something else

My 2nd choice was https://coinsquare.io who have lower trading fees, but their transfer rates are ugly.

The first time I was noticed about Steemit it was when it reached the top 20 market cap in coinmarketcap.com in march 2017, and I thought it was another sh*tcoin pump.

When the price dropped and the spam storm finished, I figured out how does this work. I was tired of using faucets and would like to meet new people, so decide to join.

Welcome and thanks for entering the contest!

Hello:) I started steem about 5 days ago, because my good buddy @lukinsawyer has been urging me to start. At first I thought it was kind of funny to do something other then the regular social media platforms. But Man I was so Wrong
I figured because I was about to be a dad, and take some time off work and school...it would be a fun thing to do. Then I got to blogging, and reading peoples comments and post and it started changing my whole way of thinking about social media. why does everybody have to be so negative and judgemental?

On STEEM there is nothing but positivitey, constructive criticism, and nothing but peer amazing comments and posts to read. I've never actually been on a site where everybody is always looking out for one another, and it does not get better then then that. Thankyou for making this competition because I have been thinking about how happy I am about Steem and have been wanting to posts it somewhere. So why not here:)
Have a great Day

Yes, I do agree with you that this is a very different platform than what I was used to. I'm loving it here too.

Thanks for participating!

I discovered steem as I was going through my Google's suggested news. As I joined j felt that this is soo much better. Better than wasting my time on other social media and getting nothing.
Now I feel happy to be in this community. I feel like a minimal part of the community. What I intend to do is share my knowledge and also help fund my education in every way.

and also help fund my education in every way.

Welcome to Steemit! I wish you much success in funding your education.
Thank-you for entering my contest.

Hopefully I will.
Thanking you.

I happened upon steemit by pure chance. I've been heavily into researching/investing in cryptocurrencies/passive income options this past year especially and was on eobot.com and read about each of their coin options. STEEM being one of them and I really liked the idea of a coin created with social media in mind. I think everyone would enjoy getting paid or having the chance to passively earn while doing what most do every day with social media. Our lives in the past decade or so have been largely consumed by our tech gadgets and the majority of its is in one way or another intertwined with social media platforms. A platform that blends in earning potential for its users just kind of seems logical and natural to me. At the end of the day not a single social media platform has value without it's user base, why haven't we been being rewarded all along is really the better question?
Overall, I've been really impressed with the material on steemit. It's not full of garbage and troll comments as people are for the most part being held accountable by their own profit potential, so in that way it in part self moderates. Happy to be a part of it and look forward to watching the coin/community grow.

Great comments! I'm getting the feeling we are all thinking very similarly about this wonderful platform.

Thanks for participating!

I discovered Steemit after I heard a throwaway comment on a youtube video. Intrigued I searched for Steemit and was fascinated by the concept of blogging for money. I didn't have any knowledge of crypto currency, I have slightly more now. I signed up and waited a few days to be accepted - this was 25 days ago.

As the saying goes I came for the money but stayed for the community: it truly is magical and I have never seen anything like it in all my years online. 7 days ago I joined the minnowsupport project, headed by @aggroed. I soon became a greeter on the PALNet Discord channel and now help freshly arrived minnows to acclimatise to the platform, supporting where I can. This for me is so much more rewarding, you just cannot put a dollar value on the feeling I get when helping fellow minnows.

I feel exactly the same way! Thanks for your post and entry.
