The gift is $120
Money not paid
16 x $1.5 = $24
Amount not paid divided by people that didn't pay
$24/4 = $6
Money per person times total people equals cost of gift.
20 x $6= $120

  1. 1.5 x (16/4 ) = 6 per person x 20 = 120

Answer is $120.00

I had to do it twice! Almost got it wrong

so if 16 guys pay 1,5$ more because 4 didn't pay that means these 4 guys need to pay 24$. so each need to pay 6$. 6x20 gives 120$

120 dollars.

(x+1.5)8=12x
8x+12=12x
12x-8x=12
4x=12
x=12/4
x=3
cost of gift is 12x3= $ 36

Let the gift cost be Y,
(0.05y+$1.5)(16)=y,
0.8y+$24=y,
so y=$120

The gift cost is 120$,
As mention out of twenty, four employees couldn't contibute therefore remaining 16 have to pay 1.5$ more.
16 × 1.5 = 24 $, 24 $ was the contribution of 4 employees who couldn't contribute.
24/4 = 6 $ , 6 $ is the fair contribution from one employee out of twenty employees.
Total contribution is 6 $ × 20 = 120 $
Hence, answer is the cost of gift is 120 $

120 $
