Fractal Writing Contest #7, and winners of the previous one.

in contest •  7 years ago

The SIXTH Fractal Writing Contest is over. There were 15 contestants, the 2nd highest count so far. We had short stories, poems, and haikus, but no picture this time (@ronism, you hear?!). A recurring theme was of two concepts meeting each other, forcibly or in smoothness -- which is very well reflected in the fractal image! It was difficult to choose from such good and creative entries, but it had to be done ;) My personal favorite is @bryarose23's entry, a short story of great creativity that opens up so many doors for further writing and exploration.

The contest post expired with a reward of 2.814 SBD, and the rewards are as follows:

USERPLACEREWARDENTRY
@bryarose231st1.5 SBDshort story
@acousticsteveo2nd0.7 SBDhaiku
@warpedpoetic3rd0.7 SBDpoem
@crypticalmention-haiku

Congratulations to all participants and a big thank you to all upvoters. I'd like to see more participation in these contests and get a bigger reward pool to distribute, so it would be helpful to resteem and/or upvote. If there are enough SBDs made by the contest post, I will try to reward a 2nd- and 3rd- place winner, as well.

By the way -- I was thinking of sending printouts of the fractal to the winners instead of SBD rewards, but I have to check out how to do it first; online on-demand print services, perhaps? If anyone has any suggestions feel free to post them.

This week, the SEVENTH installment of the Fractal Writing Contest will run.

The Contest

Each post in this contest series will contain a fractal, a 2-dimensional representation of a complex mathematical formula. The participants have to post a comment with something inspired by the fractal, be it just a title, a haiku, a story, whatever.

Rules

  • You have to reply with a comment in the contest post.
  • The reply must be inspired by the fractal, but no explanation needed.
  • Any kind of content is acceptable: just a title, a haiku, a poem, a short story, a painting, a photo, a video, a doodle, whatever. The content must be yours, no links to other people's work accepted.
  • I will pick the best reply, when the post expires (1 week after posting it).
  • The winner gets half the SBD made in the post, minimum 1 SBD. The rest are split to the other winners: if there are enough SBDs made by the contest post, I will try to reward a 2nd- and 3rd- place winner, as well.
  • Upvotes and resteems are welcomed, but not necessary to participate.

Sort Order:

She required the most beautiful jewel for her crown.

She would not marry the Highest King unless it was set in pure gold upon her dark hair.

It spoke to her, had whispered across distances to her.

“I am yours, only you are worthy”

And with her beauty, and her wiles, she made the Highest King fetch it for her. Killing thousands on his jihad of love.

When he found it, word was sent and wedding arrangements made.

The golden crown was hot and ready for the stone to be set, just so.

When the king arrived, he ordered that she be held down while the crown was applied. Her skin melted and hair burned while she screamed. Eyes rolling back in otherworldly pain. Muscles twisting like a worm impaled on a hook.

“It was never for you” he laughed.

He revealed the stone against his chest, next to his heart. The brightness seemed to spread across his skin, like a wound left to fester on one abandoned for dead.

This is good! I had a similar idea. Considered not posting after reading this but went ahead.

A great (but short!) story-- sometimes beautiful things are cursed... I liked this story very much and read it a couple of times, excellent!

1st WINNER of this contest! More details in Fractal Writing Contest #8.

Thank you!

Great entry, very creative and imaginative with strong pictures evoked.

mirror to your soul

could be the title of this fractal. Thanks!

strangely that was the initial name of my piece, but I got a bee up my bonnet and changed it last moment

Scarab amulet of the forgotten Queen Na'eemah given to her by the Sky gods. Worn in the center of her headdress. She was a great healer of her worshipers. The sick and wounded would pilgrimage to her temple and kneel before her. The amulet would glow in all colors of the spectrum. The magic light relieving all pain and ailment.

We are definitely on the same wavelength, this fractal spoke jewel to me instantly! Nicely done!

The Healing Scarab, eh?? It never seemed like a scarab to me, but after so many scarab-entries I start wondering what is wrong with me!? Thank you for entering.

@moneyinfant has added your contest to the list Steemit Writing Contests: Issue #32. The list is updated on a daily basis and your contest will remain on the list until its expiration - there's nothing you need to do.

The list was created to save writers the excessive amount of time spent searching through the #contest tag for writing contests. Now they can just come to the list each day, see new contests and use their time doing what they love - writing.

If you'd like to help spread the word about the Steemit Writing Contest List I'd really appreciate a resteem, but it certainly isn't necessary. The project is simply meant to help writers save time and contest creators attract more contestants.

P.S. If you know of any contests I've missed I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!

3rd Prize Winner! More details in Fractal Writing Contest #8.

@nyarlathotep thanks for running this contest. It's a lot of fun. Maybe I'll submit something other than a haiku for #8. We shall see. 😎

Lovely haiku, I am so fond of them! Never seemed like a scarab to me, until I read your entry and my eyes opened to the Scarab of the Universe! Thank you for participating again.

With tongues of fire the flaming serpents
Lap at the edges of reality
Howling with the hungry cries
Of the Void;
Yet silent sits the spider
In the center of the web
Knowing that with patience
She will consume
All...

Yet silent sits the spider

This has so much power and tension, of something lurking to take dark actions... thank you for participating.

Glad you like it. Thanks for a great contest!

Wow! Thanks!!

A title : ABYSS OF DOOM

Thanks for your submission.

Dragon-tailed cosmos,

ever whirling, eternal.

Will creatures escape?

Great competition. Here's my haiku entry ^^

cheers
Anj :D

Yeah. another great haiku, thanks!

Thank you Nyarlathotep :D

Cosmic paw prints mark yon terrain,
visible clues on a quest to
represent what may still remain
of our universe, of which few
understand such a vast domain.
Silently float, if I were you
I would try to keep my mind sane;
hallucinate, what else to do?

hallucinate, what else to do?

This sounds so normal, one should simply... hallucinate! Thank you for your entry.

Awakening, calm and peaceful like.
A single tendril of a story line clinging to my consciousness. Altered by its flavor, I am curled within a series of confident thoughts. Familiarity blossoms all the way down, as would the fluid recursions of a Mandelbrot set. And yet, with the alacrity of a skin walker, slipping in and out of lives, in an instant the pattern is broken. What was has been hidden, waiting to be reborn behind the veil of the dream state.

Nice story, thanks for submitting and welcome to the steem-blockchain!

Thank you!! Glad to be here :)

I won something? Awesome! Do you mind if I turn my submission into spoken word and post on my wall? I will add the link of this contest to it.

Please do -- and link it here too!

I don't think I did too well with this. Well this is the link below https://steemit.com/dsound/@warpedpoetic/20180226t124254500z-fractured-words-spoken-word-poetry

You did do well, @warpedpoetic! Cool contest, @nyarlathotep!
Cheers!

You did well! Nice reading and vivid images of the poem, very fitting to that fractal. Looking forward to your entry for the new contest, if you get the necessary inspiration.

Nice

Sorry I didn't partake in the last one.

Couldn't clear my head for dear muse to come in. Will try to put in an entry for this one

I'd be happy to see your entry for this week's contest! I understand how it goes though, if the "creative-juices" are not flowing, it is hard to come up with something that makes the cut. I hope there will be many more contests in the future and plenty of opportunities to participate.
