What is the Deadpost Intitiative?
The Deadpost Initiative is an attempt to give love to some posts that were overlooked during their short 7 day life span, a chance to bring your old posts back to life and maybe make some friends in the process. The goal is not only to share some love with SBD but also by engagement to generate discussion.
Last week
This week was a great week for the Deadpost Initiative. We continue to get great deadposts and the engagemnt keeps going up. We are now getting more support so prizes will slowly be able to rise above 10 STEEM every week. Thank you everyone who contributes deadposts, replies to entries, upvotes, resteems, and reads these posts.
I mentioned in a post yesterday, that I would start using my upvote to try to curb the handicap on posts that aren't the first few of the week. I'll give a push to posts which have not gotten much notice. That means if don't upvote your entry right away, I will get to it towards the end of the week. We'll try this for a bit and see how it works.
Last Week's Winners
@axeman - $ 2.5 STEEM prize
I never expected to have wedding pictures in our deadpost contest, but this post deserved it. @axeman takes some great photos and everyone seemed to appreciate them very much.
Wedding stories - L&I
@celestal - $ 2.5 STEEM prize
@celestal shares with us another post from his series on criminal justice. I very much appreciate these posts as they look at many aspects of what could be done better with criminal justice including both the human side and the philosophical side.

@creationofcare - $ 2 STEEM prize
These are some eerie photos of some abandoned junk in Death Valley. I really find this kind of scenery fascinating, to wonder what kind of lives were being lived here, what took place and caused these objects to be put here and left here like this. Who they belonged to, every object has a story.

@axios - $ 2 STEEM prize
I read this post the first time around before it was a deadpost and I was blown away with the consistent high quality of @axios's posts. I'm glad to see he's joined the deadpost initiative. In this post, he shares a lot of deep wisdom. He explains the reasoning behind doing exactly the opposite of what you are supposed to do and going straight towards your fears. Read it!

@irastra - $ 2 STEEM prize
This was really fascinating to me. I am not surprised that ideas like this have been floated around before, but to actually see them as they may have first been shared and to learn where they may have come from (a relative of Freud!?) was interesting! I'd really love to read this book!

Hi @whatamidoing. I had forgoten about this fantastic initative, when it popped in my head the other day. So here is another of my Scuba Scribe articles from a couple of months back. This is a detailed report of my experience snorkeling with whale sharks in Mexico, including a video that I shot on the trip. I remember being quite disappointed at the time when it only made $2. Thanks for this chance to revive the post and most importantly, share it with some new readers. I have upvoted and shall resteem this post: https://steemit.com/blog/@raj808/and-127909-scuba-scribe-6-mexico-the-greatest-whale-shark-aggregation-on-the-planet

I've been really lucky with my diving to be fair @lavidaesunviaje. The hammerhead in Egypt being the most amazing instance. It's why I feel such a spiritual affinity with the ocean, it seems like every time I jump in, somewhere tropical, I get sharks, turtles or some other awesome sea-life stopping by to say hello. I count myself blessed with my marine-encounter score. P.S. I have had some uneventful dives in the UK, where the best thing I saw was a crab or some moss ;-)

Nice photos. Yes. We sure can relax when in nature and get more into synch with ourselves and realign back to more natural rhytms. In the city we pick up all sorts of frequencies, so we quickly fall out of natural rhytms that can replenish us.

This subject resonates with me right now, because I was actually having a pretty intense discussion about this earlier today.
The phrase epistemic humility comes to mind. Most of your essay makes sense to me, in that there is a larger reality differentiated from anyone's particular perception of it. To say "truth is relative" strikes me as reckless in the face of this, however.
This suggests that the fallibility of subjective perception somehow defines truth itself. Truth is simply what has happened and what is happening. Whether anyone knows it or not does not alter this - and I make this statement as a matter of epistemic humility. That very humility provides the usefulness of such a statement, which corresponds with much of what you wrote.

I like your epistemic humility phrase there. In my opinion it demonstrates that we operate with very little bits of the truth, while at the same time, operating fully from it by acknowledging that we don't know what we don't know.
There's different forms of truth in this sense then, isn't there? The truth of one person seeing at point 1a is likely different from the truth of the person observing from point 1b. They may share an objective truth, yet their personal truths are strictly based on where they are, in relation to the point of observation and the context from which they filter their own experience.
This can get very heady very fast. I think that it really does come down to the question, how do you define truth?"
I don't agree or disagree with you here @fireawaymarmot. I am mostly curious as to which truth is truth for you...
Thanks for reading and sharing this very intriguing perspective!

Ahhh, I loved the! There seems to be a lot of emphasis on transparency as some kind of ultimate virtue emerging through this generation of people raised with the internet, and transparency is set up as the opposite of privacy. I would much prefer to look at privacy in contrast to secrecy as you explore here. I wrote a response to Dan (developer of steemit and EOS) when he stated we needed radical transparency in order to eliminate bad actors and prove to those who seek to control us that we have nothing to hide. I argued that transparency should come from the top down, becoming more of a requirement with the more power an organization or individual has, and that for us regular folk, it should be encouraged to foster trust, but entirely optional.
I think your article would have helped me to make an even better argument. I hope that you can rewrite it once you’ve grown a bigger following and really get this idea out there more!

Thanks very much. I'm sure Dan is quite adept at negotiation, so there may have been a particular context for his comments - I haven't had the chance to read them directly. I will say that in order for trust to function properly, it needs to be earned mutually, a two way street through the commons of public communication.
Those who create a common space (like a website) for others to use (by choice) have the right to set the rules for transparency, as long as they're up front and consistent about this, and keep those rules within the voluntary space that they have set. However, power in many forms does create multiple pressures around this notion.
Freedom of choice in respect to personal privacy is a line that must be held fast.

The conundrum we have now is that these websites become increasingly difficult to opt out of. As much as I’d like to close my Facebook account, it would takes weeks of research to put together contact information for all the people I’m friends with on there and even if I did, many would ignore my emails because they’re more used to using Facebook to contact. Even if we opt out theyccollect information on all IP addresses. If you have a smartphone it always comes with iOS or Android. So it becomes a much bigger issue than “our platform, we set the rules, deal with them”
Dan worried me a bit with his reasoning because he seemed to imply that we should all be willing to share anything and everything about ourselves in order to prevent those in power to justify a crackdown on crypto and whatever platform we are using. I’m not sure how far he wants to go with this or how flexible he is. He didn’t reply to my comment, there were so many comments haha
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Those are very good points - I was thinking about this when I wrote of multiple pressures. A lot of these platforms have pulled a bait and switch in regards to their rules, not being upfront and consistent at all.
How much of an option "voting with your feet" amounts to, depends on two variables (that come to mind): the variety of alternative options available (from websites to browsers, v.p.n.'s, and even different s.p.'s), and how much of the aggregate population can become well informed on these matters. More specifically, how well informed are the people that one needs to communicate with in these ways.
From what I can see the options for migrating contacts is mostly between large platforms. I know that minds.com has a migration option from facebook, at least in general.
I'm also aware of how "voting with your feet" can mean giving up ground upon which you've invested, to say nothing of the many costs of moving (including the strategic implications of giving up ground). The strongest argument to make in respect to this is to confront the arbitrary practice of rules set by the owners of those platforms, and that they need to be held responsible to their word.
Your earlier point about transparency from the top down relative to power corresponds with a lot of this. A Discord group, for example, setting it's own rules, can bring more of a "take it or leave it" approach. But even at that level it's important not to bait and switch people on your rules. And the way that power tends to consolidate into control over others, is always a thing to keep in mind.
Having different transparency relative to power can only be effective when people are well informed going in to a platform, otherwise you end up relying on an even more powerful entity imposing transparency rules on that platform. And that larger entity comes with it's own propensity for corruption and arbitrary rule. Unfortunately most of us have been duped into a lot of these platforms, and it will take a great deal of difficult work to find a workable solution.
Will blockchain technology render the freedom to choose obsolete? Or could it enhance such freedom? I think that freedom and responsibility, for what you choose to bring to others, go hand in hand. They are not opposites.
A quick possible example of strategically effective "voting with your feet": the history of Image Comics.

I found your article interesting, especially about the different ways in which humans have messed themselves up in the past by using products they didn't understand the long term risks off. Maybe it will turn out to be the same with plastics! There is too much plastic products in the world for sure @irastra. I can't remember the last time I didn't return from a dive without my BCD jackets full of plastic bits and bobs. It's really disheartening when your drifting peacefully with the current and see a beautiful green turtle eating what you think is a jelly fish, only to discover as you get closer that it's a plastic bag! It's enough to make me cry sometimes. I've literally helped pull a plastic bag out of a turtles throat when in Mexico helping out with the breeding conservation groups. Poor thing was retching away for hours :(

Thanks for your answer. It seems that we, humans, have a similar problem, as there are tiny pieces of plastic in the drinking water, and in animals that live in the seas and oceans, so if we eat them then we eat the degraded plastic that is in them. Only they are too small for us to see.

This could come close to mission impossible. If anyone of us, unless living in the jungle and dressing in the rawhide, takes a look around, anyone can see lots of items made out of plastic. Maybe we can use less of it, but I doubt we can get rid of it entirely just so easily.

No plastic is the way of the future. There is no future in plastic, at least how we know it now. Recognizing the toxicity of plastic is step one. Recognizing that a future without plastic can exist is step two.

I agree there is no future in plastic, but will the new materials be less toxic and more quickly degradable with less toxic impact? For instance, my spectacles are full plastic and without them I can not read, should I stop reading then? And spectacles are not produced any other way? Or, anyone using make-up produces quite some amount of plastic waste. Or, let's see matrasses - just how many are they made out of something else than plastic foam? Toothbrush? Just how many things can anyone replace with some natural material that one can afford? And so on.

I understand your point. I use plastic too.
What I teach my children is that before they can live a reality, they have to be able to imagine it.
Are there other solutions to your glasses, toothbrushes and mattresses? Yes. Are they affordable? Not for most people.
We can simultaneously use what is available to us in the now, and imagine-think-suggest on improvements. The only way to improve is to know we can.
So yes. I use plastic. Yes, I know there are better solutions. Yes, I aim for those better solutions.
It took many years for plastic to become the problem it is today, it will take even more years to find the solution. But we will only find it if we realize there is a solution to be had.
And yes. I hope that the solution is less toxic. If the solution is more toxic than it is not a solution at all.

Something most of us know but don’t think enough about. I don’t really buy too many things, in part because I think consumerism is an addiction as harmful as coffee or cigarettes, but also because it hurts the planet. Not only plastic bags, but also the products you put inside them will usually become garbage. Where are all those iPhone 2’s now? I buy a new phone or computer only when my old one becomes difficult to use.

Yes, we usually find out what we did to others and consequently to ourselves way too late, when the damage is practically irreparable.

Your DeadPost Initiative is a great idea to give posts a second chance. Since most of our posts are only visible for 10-15 minutes on the NEW list this is perfect for those with few followers.
@whatamidoing here's a side of me that you might not have seen, or that you have and wished you hadn't ;-)

I love your sculptures and your thought process.
I too am an artist although I have not, as yet, posted any of my fine art. (I think you may like some of it though).
I have followed you and look forward to seeing/reading more.

I didn’t realize Florida was reckless... I liked the sculpture that resembled the swaying 🌴 palm tree.

Florida is a lot more than oranges, tourists, and hanging chads!

😂😂😂 “rock less” I didn’t know Florida was free from rocks. That autocorrect!

I hate autocorrect! Although reckless worked just fine.
We do have rocks here but they're mostly buried in the ground and are variations of limestone. You can dig a really big hole in many places and NOT find a rock or stone. Some places west of Miami you can't dig at all because it's all limestone. But in general we have SAND, lots of sand. One can even become reckless in the sand!

This is cool. So your name derived from this concept or it’s a name you’ve given this concept?
Life is art so I’m very open to the idea of seeing anything as art, although, to be honest, I have a hard time recognizing some pop music as such.

The objects were there first and I then created the name so I could register the domain name ;-) I'm rebuilding my web site just now so the link which explains the context is probably down.
I'm upgrading the shop to accept STEEM!
Yea, I struggle with some of today's "music" even though my thesis contained electronic music (circa 1974)

This was definitely the first time I've ever heard of the concept of "yulem objects". Thanks for enlightening me! The objects you shared were really interesting. My favorite was the hurricane palm. It's like nature's art!

Wonderful post, I completely agree with you, just because one is rich doesn't mean that person is sucessful. According to me a person is sucessful if he or she is happy with where they are in life, such people are definitely winners.

I feel for you. My parents were lucky enough to be cursed with 2 children who failed to meet their expectations which has forced them to grow as people.
As we are two very different kinds of failures, neither of which fit textbook definitions of failure and both of which are quite happy, they’ve had to explore many different ideas of what success means and see, to be slowly coming around. They sure did a lot of damage despite really caring, when we were young though.

Last month I wrote a general introduction into the regulatory processes that take care of the human energy metabolism. It's basic information, necessary for the understanding of principle body functions. I hope you @whatamidoing and all the others here enjoy it! :)

Very nice post but I can see why it didn’t do well, most people don’t really think much about the sciences. There is a niche for posts like these though and I hope they can do well. Have you found that niche yet?
