The Deadpost Initiative - Week 40 - Share your most undervalued work ($17 STEEM rewards last week)

in contest •  6 years ago  (edited)

What is the Deadpost Intitiative?

The Deadpost Initiative is an attempt to give love to some posts that were overlooked during their short 7 day life span, a chance to bring your old posts back to life and maybe make some friends in the process. The goal is not only to share some love with SBD but also by engagement to generate discussion.

Last week

The posts were great as usually but engagement fell short of recent weeks at the initiative. I hope this week will have much more engagement. Keep at it guys.

I think I will enter again.

I wrote this post about avoiding things that offer to make our lives better by changing us and accepting the self a few months ago but It did not do very well. I think it is pretty good though and I hope that you all agree.

”The idea that we "need" to change is often used as a means of exploitation and the antidote to is learning to accept the self for what it is.

This was excellent! I love this. I’ve been thinking and writing about this same thing – and I think you expressed it better than I ever could.

With your permission I’d like to include this in an email periodical I produce for my readers (off-Steem). This is the kind of content that will bring readers to this platform!!!! 😊🙏🏽☯️

Thank you.

Yeah that would be okay if you want to use it.

"If you donate money to me, you will be a 'good person', people really believe that? Learning to accept ourselves and our flaws definitely is what brings about growth. When we keep trying to change ourselves to be "perfect" just to experience growth or be successful it becomes counterproductive. And besides, life's imperfections is what makes it exciting.

Haha yeah there are more than you might think. I always think of those grifter preachers that get people to think their level of "goodness" is directly tied to how much money that they are willing to donate.

Heheheh! Its really sad that people do believe that...

Wow... there is so much I could say about this. Thank you so much for opening this door. I agree completely that the first step is to accept yourself, but after that, you can change if you want to. I mean, just because we are born a certain way does not mean we have to stay that way. I often ask myself "who I want to be", then look for tools to transform the parts of myself that are blocking the path. Over the years, I have used many, many tools, and the truth is, I am more ME now than I have ever been. Thanks to those tools, I have created a growth path that had to pass through acceptance in order to reach a new level. Not sure if that makes any sense. :)

I actually just read an article earlier this week about how all this focus on "self help" and "self optimization" can make us less happy: https://www.gq.com/story/why-self-help-makes-you-less-happy
Your post goes along with that. If we're never satisfied with ourselves, and always striving, how can we ever be content? Yes, as you say, if you really want to improve an area of your life and make a goal and stuff, great! But the norm in society pretty much is "never be content with yourself or your life," and we wonder why we are so unsatisfied.

good stuff and so very true really liked this part

They are not our enemies that need to be rooted out and slain. They are our left eye and our little toe. We can not lose them without subtracting from the whole.

Well written post about ourselves. We are ourselves is treasure but we are trying to find ourselves in else's treasure. Teachers, books and society is taking the advantage on ourselves by giving what we do not need. If we are able to see what we have, then all problems will be solved. The adoption of acceptance has almost ended with modern education. Now we do not question anymore but accept answers without doubt and experience.

I forgot to come by and do the needful last week, sort of got carried away... But I will be sure to check back later on this week! Congrats to you guys!... Here is my entry for this week; https://steemit.com/life/@audreybits/for-when-you-feel-defeated-83dca429faf8dest

I like this point: "Failing doesn't define you as a failure." I think a lot of people have trouble seeing that sometimes. It it hurts but it is not a lasting feeling.

Yeah, that truth can be quite hard to see with all of those overwhelming feelings but realizing that will definitely motivate us to rise from that defeat and move on!

I liked this. Good old fashioned common sense!

I’m glad I read this, as today I had moments of feeling a bit blurrgh, considering some of my recent stuff-ups, worried that I’m not good enough...

But there is a difference between failing, and being a failure. My ‘failings’ are lessons, ones that I’ve learned from.

Thanks for some amazing insight!

😊🙏🏽☯️

I am so glad you found my post helpful.. That feeling of "not being enough" can do a whole lot of harm to us. And yeah, failings are there for us to learn from..

My pleasure!

Great points! I would also add, "learn from what you can, let go of the rest." All failures provide lessons, but if we don't learn them, we will keep repeating them over and over. And at the same time, some failures are not due to any mistakes, they are just incompatibilities. It is no use going through all the what ifs around the incompatibilities, the best you can do is learn how to recognize them in advance so that next time you don't get into the same situation!

Learning definitely can't be taken out of it! Once we let ourselves learn from these situations, we begin to truly experience growth and as you said, its gonna help us recognize such situations next time...

Aho!!

I forgot to come by last week as well, enjoyed your post. I think we all feel this ebb and flow of life, and perhaps I felt last week a lil bit of that defeat that you wrote about.

With a slight feeling of defeat, we tend to crawl back into our shells and hide ourselves from the world. And it's definitely not our fault to react in that manner.

but now am back out of my shell and ready to laugh under the sun and dancing in the moonlight.

I am glad you are finally out and ready to finally dance and laugh through life!!

=D

In the Hindi scriptures, it is written that "Victory and defeat is part of life". I mean if we accept our defeat in mind, then we lose. And we do not need any competitor to lose, but our disappointment is enough. The man's nature has been invasive since the beginning, under which he has to win and when he loses, he does not acknowledge that defeat and falls into the deep well of despair. By the way you have written a good post.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

Its all about mindset, really. When we start accepting the defeat, then, we start losing for real...

Agree with your point. And nowdays this mindset is totally missing.

Another week and another entry for me:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@acesontop/the-upside-down-perspective-of-steemit
Although this week my post didn't get to the prize list I hope this one will. Congrats for your initiative and the ones supporting it and to all that are participating and of course winning your contests. Definitely a great initiative.

Absolutely! Most of the newbies are getting these misconceptions. You explained so well about it. We can follow these instructions that you provided in your blog.

If you found my view useful feel free to put it to the test.

I think it's important to talk about these misconceptions. Because we all had them when we first started, but there are not enough people that are putting up an effort to tell us we're wrong. It's important to get those false ideas out of the way as soon as possible, so people won't get disappointed and leave before they even got started.

I am rid off this types of false ideas and conceptions for months. One should post whatever likes and feels like. That's why when you enter your blog you actually enter the "my blog" section and that's your world. Everybody is unique and has something to offer so why follow others recipes fro success.

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, there is a lot of peer pressure here on SteemIt...

All the so called “rule” people this around here get annoying. They are helpful guidelines, but more people should focus on just having fun.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Exactly. And be themselves. That's the best recipe for success in my opinion. Who can be you better than yourself.

I love this initiative! There are so many great posts that get overlooked. Excited to see what people have proposed this week. Here is my submission! https://steempeak.com/music/@yvesoler/secret-to-my-success

The key is definitely to follow your passions and staying in that environment even if what you need to do there is really small. It would seem like the lowest point of one's life but that's how one can grow to the top- appreciating those little beginnings.

Agreed! While it may have seemed like I was at the bottom, I learned so much and had so much fun doing those little jobs in the environment. It was also very humbling to see all the work that goes into putting something big together. I am so happy that I did it, as it gave me an appreciation for the people that has stayed with me.

I liked your post. In this age of instant gratification many people forget about the good old fashioned value of working your way up from the bottom.

So true!!

Great post that has a lot of truth in it. If you do something you're passionate about, you are motivated. And motivation is the key to success

Thank you! I completely agree!

Making these posts are a lot of work and 4 months ago they were usually rewarded enough to justify all the work. Now? Hmmmm....no, not really. But I keep on posting, just less often now. So here is another Armadilloman "How I Did That" photo blog.

These are really cool eye patches. I am glad that these are available to those in need.

Okay, here is my entry for this week. Thanks for this awesome contest!! :)
https://steemit.com/sexism/@phoenixwren/sexism-hurts-everybody

I live in a somewhat conservative state where gender roles are still clinched unto, although many are becoming more woke. Being a product of such a society I still have my bias, might not be the extreme form of sexism but the very subtle part of it that may go unnoticed. I still won't let my little sisters do certain things I consider manly; I still stereotype some behaviors.

I think we cannot totally eradicate such behaviors in a short while but it is an ongoing cleansing of old norms which will take time but I'm glad this types of conversations are ongoing and reshaping our ideologies.

Nice post

Thanks. It's good that you can see it and recognize it when it happens! That's the first step, really.

Congrats to all the winners! :) This is a great initiative and I look forward to participating again. Here is my entry for this week.

Nice. Stuff starts to look pretty trippy when you get close enough to it lol.

I second this nomination! :) Sometimes we all need a reminder to love ourselves.

Here's a piece on the Father of Bangladeshi Surfing. I really enjoyed sharing Jafar Alam's journey, especially his work introducing surfing to at-risk local youth.

Hello @whatamidoing!
It looks like I am the first to enter this week!
I choose a 5 months old post about my travel to Parga.
I hope you like it :)

wow, that sand, that water, gorgeous!!!! now I want to go to greece! great photos, makes me want to take a nap, then swim, then eat, then repeat over and over! <3

Beautiful place and photos! I found your descriptions and bit of history of the area interesting as well. Enjoyable post! :)

Thank you very much for my award and the realization of this wonderful contest that enhances quality content.

Here’s my entry, my thoughts on how we could use blockchain and cryptocurrency technology to help improve tertiary education engagement by students..... enjoy 😊 https://steemit.com/steempress/@metametheus/gamifyingeducationalsettings-h6ovvlghxw

Posted using Partiko iOS

I really like that idea. When I was still in school I would totally phone in the any online stuff that was requured for a class having a reward system like we have here might have had me spending a little more time on it.

The bonuses are a for good grades are a great idea too. I always stressed out about trying to make A's but there were a lot of people who were happy if they were passing. That might give them a reason to try a little harder.

While I like the gamification aspects, I would be worried if the students started to only do things for tokens. There have been studies done that having a portion of learning be more gamified helps students focus more on the tasks. Things like badges or even tokens could help with attention, but the question still remains, "are the kids playing to learn or to win?" If it is both, no problem, but when it becomes only to win, then learning is no longer taking place. I have no idea how you would check for that, but it would be my biggest concern.

In the context of the setting I’ve been in, students enrol in the course because they want to learn, they’re already motivated to be there and immerse themselves in the learning.

Gamifying using tokens becomes an incentive in the struggle to maintain attention and enthusiasm when they have competing demands (work, etc).

We already have ‘gateways’ and other mechanisms in online learning portals to ensure they have to attend to tasks before coming to class. It would be easy (for the tech people) to ensure that they are achieving set learning outcomes, and that tokens would be distributed accordingly.

And of course, there is only one win: and that is graduating. Which then gives them the qualification, without which they cannot practice within the profession. The amount of token does not necessitate graduation.

Posted using Partiko iOS

I agree with everything you wrote until the last sentence:

And of course, there is only one win: and that is graduating.

Graduating without learning is not a win, in my opinion, which is why I asked the question. To me, the win is to graduate because you learned the material. If gamification helps with that goal, then do it! You could also find non-tech ways to introduce gamification until the tech team implements it. There are lots of different badges and games to be played when you get together to learn.

Not sure what kind of tertiary education contexts you’re familiar with. But in our course you cannot graduate unless you’ve learned.

This is imperative in a course that is producing clinical practitioners in a primary healthcare profession.

If you haven’t “learned” you just won’t graduate. It’s as simple as that. Otherwise, the public are exposed to serious risk. There are a number of measures to ensure that final year students only pass if when they can demonstrate their competency.

I recognise that this may not be the case in some courses, however as an educator I’d venture to say that most people who graduate will have learned something.

Great to hear!

I really do love the idea of gamiyfing education, that will definitely help motivate students and keep them focused on learning, it will make learning exciting, and that's really amazing!

I like this idea. One of the only fitness apps I used consistently was one that offered bages for completing so many days in a row as well as number of sessions. Turning this idea to education would definitely help with engagement.

Here's my post:

How Music Changed My Life

It's a post that takes.me (and maybe you too) on a trip down memory lane. In the mid-90s, it took only 1 album to literally change my entire life and to send me on the neverending journey of self-exploration

Great post! I think we were raised on similar music. The Offspring were from my neighborhood, so they were played non-stop on local radio. I think I saw them play at a Lollapalooza (maybe?) but I definitely remember seeing another band you mention on your post: Rage ATM. A loooong time ago they opened for U2 and put on a great show...

Wow,now you've made me really jealous. I never had a chance to see either band.
A couple of years ago, Bodycount played on a festival here, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Copkiller album, playing a retro set, but I never made it there. I still regret it... :0(

I think I read this the first time around :-D

Then you were probably one of the few, lol

Congratulations to the winners of previous week. Here is my entry for this week.
https://steemit.com/life/@faiyazmahmud/keep-motivated-and-achieve-your-goals

In this post, I wrote about Motivation. I expressed here some answers about motivation & tried to give some tips to keep motivated ourselves.

I just dropped a comment on your main post. I think it's a good article. Instead of giving lofty answers you gave practical steps by which one can stay motivated

Yeah, I just tried to give some tips for keep ourselves motivated. Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Notes From the Back of The House

Great writing and description of what its like to work in the back of the house in a restaurant. Reading this definitely took me back to my service industry days. I mostly worked as a server but spent some time in the back doing prep and expediting. I can also appreciate going back and forth mentally about the work your doing and what you really want to do, (for me it was singing / music).

thanks! yup the struggle is real, but hope springs eternal, also ready for the next fork in the road...

This is my submission. This post is about creativity and knowing when to stop being creative--if there is ever such a time.

https://steemit.com/adsactly/@nonsowrites/when-is-the-right-time-to-stop-being-creative

This was my very first origami tutorial post on Steemit. I had taught the model at my local origami class and had received good feedback, but I was also asked for a reference to the instructions. As this is an original model there wasn't a link that I could give them. I tried instructibles, but on my phone I couldn't adjust the photos or use a lot of their menus. I tried tumblr, but I couldn't work out how to upload photos with text in between. A friend had mentioned Steemit a few weeks prior when I had mentioned the fun I had answering a question on the stack exchange. If anyone wants to know, yes you can fold a fortune teller/cootie catcher with more than four arms

I decided to give steemit a go and the rest is history. Spinable Lazy Susan

I wrote this post 2 months ago but it did not get much attention. This post was written on our winter cycling trip in Himalayas and about our survival in heavy snowfall. I think this adventure journey should have more auditions.

It is a great opportunity to get confidence again. Resteeming and upvoting done for this post. Read 2 posts of fellow steemians and done upvote and comment on their work.

Wow!
Just 6 votes for such an amazing adventure, it is really a shame!
Your post surely deserved much more attention and I really don't know what to say about your adventurous spirit :)
Just breathtaking!!!

Thanks you @fotostef, initially I desperately wants traffic but now it's different. Now I know that "Good work always appreciate by Good people". And here you are. I have been roaming in Himalayas since 2008 and the mountain told me lots of story about life and experience.
Thanks for your kind words.

What an amazing story and adventure, with breath taking photos! I am glad it worked out for you all to safely make it to your destination. I really enjoyed reading this well written post. :)

I think you are the first one who read it, thanks @paradigm. I appreciate your kindness.
