[Corinth Canal]
the Canal was proposed in Classical times and a failed attempt was made to build in the 1st century. This canal connects the gulf of corinth in the lonian sea with the Sarlonic Gulf in the aegeasn sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of corinth and separates the Peloponnese from Greek mainland.
The canal was dug through the isthmus at sea level and has no locks .It is 6.4 km(4mi) in length and only 21.4 metres wide at its base , making it impassable for many modern ships. it has little economic importance and is mainly a tourist attraction.
the specification of the Corinth canal is : Length - 6.4 km , Maximus boat beam : 17.6m , Maximus boat draft : 7.3m , Locks : 0
the principal engineer of this canal was Istvan turr and Bela Gerster.
It was in use since 25th july 1893.
Ships can pass through the canal only one convoy at a time on a one way system. Larger ships have to towed by tugs. Around 11,000 ships per year travel through the water way.
Thank you.
