India reported just around 80 Covid-19 deaths in the seven days ending Sunday, the lowest toll from the pandemic recorded in the country since the week when PM Modi had announced a total lockdown in the country over two years ago.
Fresh cases of the coronavirus continued to decline for the 10th consecutive week, with the current week's tally dropping below the 10,000 mark for the first time since April 13-19, 2020. Cases detected during the week (March 28-April 3) are likely to be around 8,400 (with Sunday's data from a few states awaited), at a daily average of 1,200, and down 26% from the previous week's total of over 11,400. This means, the pandemic is currently at its lowest point in the country in nearly two years, since the initial weeks of the lockdown.
The fall in deaths from the virus has been just as sharp. At around 80, this week's death toll was the lowest since March 23-29, 2020, the week when a nationwide lockdown was imposed to slow down the spread of the pandemic in India. During that week, India had recorded 27 deaths from the virus. The fatality figures do not include deaths from earlier months added to the toll during the respective periods.
