Corporate world is difficult and stressful for everyone, be it for a CEO, or any other executive. In today's world, where everyone is working for a successful life and wants to earn more and more prestige, incentives (monetary or intangible) or they just want to come in their boss's good books, everyone has to strive and work damn hard for the same. Both hard and soft skills are required to survive in the Corporate World.

While university education may impart knowledge and technical know-how, it is your personality and unique skills that will differentiate you and take you ahead in the corporate world.

Now let me get this straight! The corporate world is ruthless and a tough place to survive, let alone thrive, for the unprepared. If you want to make any headway in the field, you’re going to have to be committed and unlearn as many things as you will learn. Here are five essential life skills that will help you sail through:

Networking: Creating a large and diverse web of contacts is essential in any vocation, but is doubly important in the field of business. Simply put: without people, there is no business to transact. Ask existing clients for additional opportunities and be on the constant lookout for potential business possibilities with the people you meet every day. Whether it’s someone on a lower rung or someone much higher, make sure you connect with them.

Diverse skill set: The era of the single-skilled individual has passed. If you want any measure of success, you will need to develop a multifaceted work capacity. See what skills you can take on to support your current career path and work them into your business approach. Time will reveal their usefulness. You’ll be distinguished from your peers and have a good advantage in the long run.

Communication: Never let yourself become the cold, unapproachable taskmaster who’s loathed universally. Your team and company efficiency will improve exponentially if the chemistry is right, and a large part of this is accomplished by building a rapport with your fellow business-people.

Time management: Make every minute count. When you’re not finalizing something, scout for a new venture. Don’t let the failures eat your time away, be done with them and march on. Work as much as possible (not that you should work for 16 hours/day but increase your efficiency in every work you do).

Reliability: The best way to make a good impression, and therefore be trusted with more work, is to be reliable. Do things on time and do them well, and you’re set for a bright future.

That’s it! Bear in mind that these five skills will be of little support if you don’t have the ability to tolerate setbacks and the determination to succeed. But they will go a long way in helping you once you possess these core qualities.
