This sounds like the C.S. Lewis philosophy of 'let the waves come, don't try to swim against them'. I personally completely disagree with it - I think a person has a responsibility to themselves to build their life up and create the best possible version of themselves - but at the same time this idea has a lot of value in the sense that people need to learn to accept the things they can't change and use the energy from those things to their advantage instead of mounting a futile resistance to them.
