Wise counsel: Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Proverbs 30:8

The Book of Proverbs, although its authorship is attributed to King Solomon, it is very likely that many of the teachings of this book come from a common background from the wisdom of the ancient peoples of the Middle East and Africa, it is not ruled out that all these peoples shared a common wisdom reflected in sayings and phrases. This is why at the end of the Book of Proverbs there is a series of phrases attributed to the wise Agur and Lemuel.
And among the phrases of Agur, there is a very interesting reflection referring to how a wise and devoted person of the Lord should live.
Living gratefully and asking God only for our daily bread is something that is repeated frequently in the Bible, we see it in the Our Father when Jesus taught to his disciples to pray; but we also see this in the book of Proverbs with this wise counsel:
"Two things I ask of you, LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ´Who is the LORD?´
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God" Proverbs 30:7-9.
The author of these proverbs asks God first of all to guide him towards the truth, that is to say towards that luminous wisdom that cannot coexist with destructiveness, to that wisdom that opposes falsehood and lies.
And as a consequence of the first request, then the wise asked for something more practical. Pleasing God means knowing how to live modestly, without asking too much because riches can deceive the heart of man and thus make man forget his neighbor and his creator; but also poverty is something that must be avoided, because the need when it is great can lead a man to sin.
Ancient wisdom teaches us that the virtues of humility and modesty reflected in this daily bread purify the soul of man and bring him closer to God.
