I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to support Freedom of Speech while being on the political left, especially in a day and age where anything not viewed as politically correct tends to get censored within the left. There really isn't much healthy discussion about disagreements within the left these days because so many people are scared of putting forth any dissenting opinion for fear of being called racist or some other sort of bigot - even when it is totally uncalled for. It gets even more complicated when I see some genuinely hateful people supporting freedom of speech. So I was in quite a conundrum and feeling rather lost.
Then today I stumbled across, quite fittingly, a video by Count Dankula. In fact, it was THE video he made after his conviction for making a joke.
His fantastic quote that put everything I have been trying to express into words starts at 4:05: "Even if you do absolutely hate someone but they say something that you agree with, there's no shame in admittin' that. There's no shame in turning around to them and basically sayin' 'I absolutely hate everythin' else that you stand for, but I agree with you on this aspect, so in this single aspect, I will give you my support. Just because you agree with someone on one thing, doesn't mean that you immediately agree with every single one of their beliefs - that's not how things work!"
Going back a little further to 3:45 also expands upon this crucial idea.
