With recent events, I wanted to reflect on how the world has persevered against a disease which rapidly spread across the world. Tenacity can be seen as a part of the drive to self-preservation, which is common in many species and appears to have been naturally selected. Without it, the will and effort to live is lost. In most animals, it manifests itself as they instinctive fight for survival against predators or prey. We also share this tenacity, but one might say that we take this in a different manner and perhaps to even greater extents.
The reason why we possess such a strong drive to self-preservation is due to our highly developed brains. Humans and other animals are driven by their instincts, but the human brain allows us to learn from past experiences and use that knowledge in future situations. But leveraging science and other areas of study, we take this to a new extreme by applying knowledge and intellect not only to survive, but also in every other aspect of life. It is needless to say that the human brain is a very powerful tool which allows us to develop technology, build cities, discover laws of physics and understand our world better than any other animal. Otherwise we might be looking at a world that resembles a certain science fiction story, perhaps with a different species at the helm.
It is not surprising that the brain has developed into a tool for survival, and so we have become highly dependent on it. We can apply our intellect to any problem and solve problems which no other animals could even conceive of. There is a downside to this though, and that is the fact that our problem solving skills are often used in situations where they aren't applicable. We apply them to problems which we have no business applying them too. This usually ends up harming us. But I have iterated that no matter if today brings failure, there is possibility that they will inspire future success. And so we hope that the vaccine brings success but should also be cognizant of what initial failure could result in, and continue to strive towards a win.
