A somewhat educated guess by Trevor Bedford at where Omicron could potentially fit in relation to the other variants of concern in regards to immune evasion and R0.
This is very rough based on the observed Omicron case growth in South Africa and assumptions of population immunity. Good data on both immune evasion and transmissibility will be available in the coming weeks.
None of these potential spots on the chart are necessarily great. If Omicron is towards the upper left of the dotted area it will likely mean previously infected and vaccinated individuals would be more vulnerable to Omicron and increase the chance that an Omicron specific vaccine is needed.
If Omicron is towards the bottom right it will be very transmissible among populations without much immunity and the herd immunity threshold would be extremely high even with an effective vaccine. However it would likely mean the vaccines were still effective albeit with somewhat reduced effectiveness.
