FL.1.5.1 is also increasing. Both are XBB variants.

FL.1.5.1 has the same spike mutation of F456L as EG.5 and an additional spike mutation of K478R, both of which are thought to be growth advantages. Genomic surveillance has been spotty, but FL.1.5.1 is prevalent in the northeast.

Moderna issued a press release saying its new vaccine targeting XBB.1.5 generates an immune response against EG.5 and FL.1.5.1. This was generally expected as these variants have fairly similar spike proteins as XBB.1.5.

The new vaccines are expected to arrive in late September/early October.
