One harmful side effect of globalization (with big help from the internet), has been that Americans see how other countries do things and assume we ought to do the same.
I'm the first to advocate America learning from other countries. But we shouldn't mimic other countries at the expense of our strengths. This equals damage and harm.
When it came to COVID-19, Americans readily saw what other countries did in response. It seemed normal for government to take control and lead way. So, Americans demanded it--and were angry when it wasn't enough. (The internet has aided fear and polarization, too).
The result? America has had a lot of COVID-19 deaths AND we have damaged communities and societies.
By seeing the world as one--and assuming we ought to be like the rest--Americans falsely believed we needed more government when the truth was that we've needed less.
America has thrived, because of its decentralized manner. Because Americans have missed this, we're now paying the price. And it will be paid disproportionally by the poor and disenfranchised--as seen here at this growing tent city in Minneapolis.
