The Diamond Princess is a petri-dish for COVID19, and given that more than 2,000 people have died from this disease, Canada and Japan need to tread very carefully.
In today's post I mean to unpack the COVID19 crisis unfolding in Japan this week, surrounding the nearly 4,000 souls on-board the Diamond Princess.
If you don't know the Diamond Princess is a cruise ship moored in Japan with more than 500 confirmed cases of COVID19 (aka the Wuflu, or Coronavirus). According to the linked article five hundred and forty-two passengers were confirmed infected as of Feb 18 2020 out of the nearly 3,800 on-board, including passengers and crew. As a result of the known infections the ship has been passed around and sat stewing while available ports decide how to handle them.
Now the plan is for any sick to disembark in Japan, and those who appear unaffected to disembark and return to their respective homes.
CBC Reported tuesday Feb 18 2020, that...
"Global Affairs Canada has said there were 256 Canadians on board the ship. In a statement Tuesday, Global Affairs said that the number of Canadians who tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, had increased to 43.
Canadians and permanent residents who are healthy will be eligible to board a charter flight, which is now expected to leave Japan on Friday."

The problem is...
Unfortunately, from what we know about COVID19 the disease is highly contagious even while the infected is asymptomatic, meaning while they are NOT visibly sick.
Therefore, we have over 3,000 humans, passengers and crew, who are going to disembark and return to their respective homes, who might well be infected and not know it.
Yes, those individuals will likely be put into quarantine for 14 days, at least the Canadians returning home will be. But this is may be inadequate. The research that is available suggests that the disease is both extremely virulent (R0 value of between 4.7-6.6 or worse) and that it can infect without triggering symptoms for up to 24 days. This means that if even one passengers is improperly handled while the disembark, or upon arrival where they return to, the number of cases could spike upward once again.
Compassion demands that these people be released from their cruise cabin prisons, but all prudence must be exercised in handling that process.
Unfortunately, I am not convinced that the disease is taken seriously by many officials and that this therefore will mean their procedural methodology in securing, transporting and testing this potential hazard will be inadequate.
If I am right, in the next 21-24 days we will see a new spike of cases in Japan certainly as most of the infected are remaining there. But we might expect a spike in COVID19 cases in Canada as the 213 "unaffected" Canadians return home for quarantine.
Lord help the passengers of the Diamond Princess, and God help us all.

Yeppers, and not only that but the MSM keeps pretending like this is no big deal. Look 2,000+ people are dead, and this is proven to be VERY contagious. This is a big deal.
And even if its not gonna make me sick, or make you sick, it can still impact us here in North America, through the financial ramifications.
Last I heard 300,000 million people in China were quarantined, that means the global factory (China) is shut down. Of course that's gonna hurt global commerce. When China shuts down, the world economy recoils... the question is how bad will that be: recession or depression?
Knowing the central bankers, they'll print their way out of this emergency, but even that has ramifications.
This is a big deal whether its litterally killing people, or figuratively killing economies.
Hope Im wrong, but I bet Im not. The next 30 days will probably clarify what is what. In the mean time Im cautious and staying informed.
