Long COVID is a condition where people experience ongoing or new symptoms three months after being infected with COVID-19. The symptoms are similar to chronic fatigue syndrome and often trigger a viral infection that lasts more than six months. About 10% of post-COVID patients experience long COVID, which can be overwhelming for clinicians to diagnose, especially in children and adolescents. A study published in JAMA Network Open shows that people who suffer from Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) are more likely to be unemployed and less likely to work full-time. A limitation of this study was that symptoms of anxiety and depression were self-reported, which may have resulted in inaccurate reporting. In addition, long COVID affects people of any age but can be severe for those between the ages of 36 and 50, women, diabetics, asthmatics, and people with autoimmune disorders. The symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, palpitations, and chest pain, among others. Researchers found that managing long COVID is similar to managing chronic fatigue syndrome, which includes educating and supporting patients, rehabilitation, and modifying lifestyle and work routines. Essential oils, cognitive therapy, opioid antagonists, and systemic drugs are being studied for treating long COVID. It's a major public health problem that affects 65 million people worldwide.
