Week 2 (September 2018)

Welcome to Meanwhile in Seattle. In this series I post images and write about anything related to what's going on in Seattle, Washington and the surrounding area. It's a chance for you to catch a glimpse of the daily life out here. Sometimes these posts will be general to all of the area and sometimes it may be more personal, like what I did on a weekend out here. Either way, I hope you enjoy seeing a different perspective on this area that I call home.

Hops in the Wild

Wine and beer are popular across the nation, but on the West Coast these two beverages are staples. Wine is produced in mass on the West Coast. According to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (part of the dept. of Treasury), California ranks 1st in wine production, Washington is 2nd and Oregon is 5th in the nation.

According to the Brewers Association, the west coast has more breweries than most other areas in the country. California ranks 1st for number of craft breweries, Washington is 2nd, and Oregon is 7th.

If you're a beer connoisseur or just into beer and brewing this is a great area to be. About 79 percent of all hops in the nation are grown in Washington and it's not uncommon to see them randomly out here as the conditions are great for growing.

I found these just the other day growing in people's yards and on the sidewalk crawling up a utility pole.

If you are into home brewing and live out here, I imagine it's pretty easy to find ingredients. Check your local home brew supply store, or just check the backyard.
