Calling all electrical engineers! Help me proof this listing for this power equipment - What do I need to know?

in craigslist •  6 years ago

The following is a 'rough draft' for a listing that we will place online. This is a craigslist type listing of working power equipment that is no longer needed. A friend of mine asked me to help him see if we couldn't sell it online, and I have come here first to get any comments or advice from the community.

If possible, please read the following listing and offer any constructive advice that you think would lead us to the successful sale of this equipment! Thanks in advance 😀 😁

This unit is 3 years old, a 'solar camel' from KEI Energy. This stores and regulates power generated from home solar to be used in case of a power outage. Without a system like these, all the power generated from the solar is 'fed back' to the grid, and we need to use a gas generator when the power goes out.

The top box is made for switching 2 separate systems, and a timer that can transition between charging and 'selling' power back to the grid. These apparatus also are designed to switch automatically with a power outage, so fast that we wouldn't lose the time on our clocks.

The battery system was rated for 5 hour with constant light use. The unit holding the batteries is very heavy; there are 4 batteries and four power inverters.

The batteries, which work fine, weigh 129 Lbs each. We found the batteries listed at RENOGY for $399.00 each with free shipping.

The unit stopped working after a hurricane. The 4 1000W Grad Tie Inverters each have 2 30A fuses which test good BUT on the outlet's end they are showing up as Run Error. We are unsure if the problem is the inverters or where they are feeding too. Each inverter is quite expensive as well.

(Inverters are a way of filtering the electricity to a constant out put which protects what's plugged in)

We have been unable to find any one who could work on it. We are looking for anyone interested/knowledgeable and plan to list this equipment on several sites at OBO - Best offer. Because of the incredible weight we would really need someone interested to come and pick it up.

My fellow steemians, @makinstuff, and anybody in the know, give us feedback or share this with someone who can. Thank you in advance!

I would get in contact with the KEI solar manufacturer and see if they could give you some ideas based on the issues. Otherwise the agm batteries alone are most of the value. I would include what voltage and how many Ah (amp hours) the batteries are rated in your listing. Since they have a few years of duty cycling they won't sell like they are brand new. Sometimes those inverters have internal protection that saves them if there is any kind of surge. It would help to look up the technical specifications/users guide on the inverters. It may have a troubleshooting guide that can point you to what that code means it's outputting. If you can prove those inverters are in working order you can get more money for the system. I guess I would unplug the outputs to those inverters and test them individually outside of the system. Just plug a small device into each one. Those are a few things I'd suggest without being able to bring a multimeter out and doing some checks. Are y'all in Costa Rica?

Thank you! The website printed on the equipment was unused, but I searched 'KEI solar manufacturer' and I did find a company by that name. Can't believe I didn't think of that before....

Some testing was done on the inverters...but I'll talk to my friend and see if I can't get more information.

This is in middle Florida, near the gulf coast.

Yeah @ecoinstant I'd hope that company can help y'all troubleshoot their product especially since it's only a few years in service. Any system should be able to handle surges without catostrophic failure. I showed this to my buddy that is an electrical technician whom lives off-grid with his own solar power system and he said he recognizes those inverters as some that may be of poor quality control from China.

@ecoinstant yeah looks good to me, that's alot of power with all those batteries and inverters. Quite a setup compared to my 300w max single car battery solar setup :-P
