In just seven years, a single pair of cats and their offspring could produce a staggering total of 420,000 kittens.

When we lived in England, it was surprisingly difficult to find kittens to rehome. In fact, I had to look hard whenever we wanted cats. The charities would have stiff requirements for people to adopt their kittens - couldn't have children... couldn't be renting... too many reasons, so people had to turn to other options.

Those staggering figures also assume that all the kittens survive - which has not been my experience. Most litters will lose one or two kittens, with new mothers, the number is much higher. If they are truly feral (the only way your scenario is actually going to happen as most people will have their pets spayed/neutered), the losses are much higher without people to help them. I've seen new mothers lose entire litters, and others who would have had it not been for interventions.

The tiniest cat on record is Mr. Pebbles, a 2-year-old cat that weighed 3 lbs (1.3 k) and was 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) high.

A cat can jump up to five times its own height in a single bound.
