Fearsome Pool Cricket

Every Christmas whilst growing up we had a family tradition and that was to have a competitive game of pool cricket. There would always be a group of guys and it didn't matter what age you were or how good you were you played. It was a painful experience, but loads of fun. The more we drank the crazier it became. No one was seriously injured and don't play it these days as there are too many young kids around.

Collis King even played pool cricket against us.

The aim was to bounce the tennis ball off the water at an angle so that it shot in different directions at the batsmen who was about 6 meters away. It wasn't an ordinary tennis ball as we had insulation tape around the one half. This made it swing and slightly heavier, but when the ball is wet it would also stick to your skin when it hit you. No shirts were allowed to be worn as we wanted to see the marks that it left. This game was payback to family members throughout the year who hadn't behaved how they should have.

Hartley Alleyne had a very quick arm.

Every year it became more competitive and we even started allowing someone in the pool to make ripples just enough to change the direction of the ball. The batsmen didn't have much chance really and the one year we had some West Indian flare with Collis King and Hartley Alleyne spending Christmas day with us.

That was some big time fun. The best way to get everyone to enjoy cricket, including those who have no clue about it.

Good to note that you are also a cricket lover. For me playing cricket with my old friends and even with my family members is much more fun than anything else. Even during the match, we fight with each other, but at the end of the day when we recall those moments it gives a lot of satisfaction.

Sounds like fun. Those kind of games where the rules are self-made and develop organically overtime are often the best for the back garden. My friends and I developed a game called "Buller Ball" at University. It was named after the road we lived in and was kind of a mix between cricket, baseball and stoolball and ideally suited to a small garden in a terrace house.

Cricket is not very popular in my country, you don't see cricket in the news, therefore I know nothing about it.

Sometimes I watch crickets on skysport, I see it as a fun game to get oneself involved but so unfortunate my country Nigeria, doesn't encourage such sport, never seen then on the front screen.
