India started the second innings lagging about 100 runs. Rohit Sharma again proved his worth by scoring a time demanded century for his team. As in the opening innings, they(batsmen) failed to perform.
Earlier in their first innings, notable contributions were made for India were by Shardul Thakur and the Indian Skipper Virat Kohli. Shardul Thakur contributed by scoring the quickest test fifty ever in England, surpassing 32 ball half-century by a ball(31). In his 57 off 36 balls , Thakur hit three over-boundaries and 7 boundaries. Kohli's captain's knock of 50 off 96 also made a sound contribution for their bowlers to defend later on . The wicket favoured the bowlers, as in the first Indian innings English bowler Chris Woakes took 4 for 55 runs and as in their turn Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah got rid of both the English openers. At the stumps, India managed to take 3 for 53 runs. In their response, England made 290.

In a bowling pitch and trailing by almost 100 runs, Rohit came to open India's second innings along with K L Rahul and see through the rest of the second day. At stumps, India was 43, not bad considering their first innings, where the English got rid of the two openers very early. Rahul followed his opening partner to the dressing room without adding a run , when their team's score was 28 runs. But in the second innings, both showed some restraint and respect for the better deliveries, K L Rahul almost made 50. Rohit his partner Rahul in the second innings at 46 when he edged James Anderson. Rohit carried on to make his first-ever overseas century.
