I won't own a gun.

I was asked the other day why I don't own a gun. It is fairly common here to carry a firearm.I have never wanted one and the responsibility that goes with it. For me it escalates the danger for the crooked and myself.I would have to read up on the laws thoroughly to see what is acceptable and what isn't.

When we are under threat or are in danger we will all act differently. No one can say what and how we will react when the moment happens. Some will panic, others will freeze and hopefully the others do something about the danger.

I have never owned a gun, except for my military days and don't want to have one today.I have been fortunate enough (touch wood) not to get into life and death situations. I may have compromised myself a few times, but I never quite saw it how others did.

I have chased thieves on numerous occasions, but they have always been too quick for big old me. I have been asked by my family not to, but I see it as defending my territory. Every time it has happened without fail,my goal is to get my hands on them. It has been close, but no cigar.

My thinking is if you are on my property you are fair game and if you leave it you are still fair game. I hunted one thief for over two hours in a sugar cane field and the only thing that saved him was a thick thorn bush that he dived through. The way I act is the reason why I don't have one. I know I would have buried a few already and God knows what laws would have been broken doing it.I can honestly say this wouldn't bug me which is probably down to spending too long in Africa. Life sadly has no value here and is easy come, easy go.

A friend of mine has a gun and I don't believe he is mentally equipped to carry a fire arm. He had an attempted burglary at home and fired a full magazine at the thieves in his garden. The problem is he shot from his lounge, shooting through the closed window. This wasn't self defense, but panic and luckily he missed all of them.

I do believe gun laws should change and only users who can handle pressure should be allowed them. There are other gun owners I know who are a danger to themselves as they wouldn't have the balls to use it.This is a bragging tool for them and I find this totally wrong. If you own a gun no one should ever know.I am a firm believer if you own a gun you need to be competent mentally and physically,to use it correctly at all times.

My father in law spent time in the navy and police in a larger city. While i have 0 confidence in carrying I feel confident he does. I just won a personal defence gun in a drawing and may never carry, but if I do it will only after working with him for a while, but I highly doubt I ever will. I just feel if im in a place where i feel I need one I probably shouldnt be in that place to begin with.

I totally agree with you. If I feel I have to carry a weapon for self defense then I am out of here.

Amen. Owning a gun for self-defense purposes is very serious business.

I think it takes it up another level and i am not going to do that. I contemplated it at one point, but it brings more headaches. At one point crooks targeted houses with guns as information was leaked who was applying for firearm licences. Inside information directly from your friendly police force.

.0004% of the population is involved in a gun incident each year. The number remains fairly static about 100,000 events per year. This includes accidents, murder, and suicide both lethal and non-lethal. It also includes Chicago.. :)

While it is estimated that there is a gun in nearly half of all households.

That is a pretty amazing safety record.

I don't debate gun laws, because it makes both the NRA and the anti-gun lobbyists richer and it is nowhere near a top health or safety problem in the US. We are just manipulated with over coverage to discuss it.

In South Africa the use of fire arms for protection is very high. On a Friday and Saturday night I will hear gunshots at least twice during the night. We have armed patrols in our neighborhood which we have to pay for.
I have been back 14 years now and on two occasions my neighbors have had shoot outs in their back yard. The threat here is real and the reason why I moved into a secure community protected by armed guards. I honestly would not live outside a community again as the chances of become another statistic are just too high.

Oops, excellent point... I should have pointed out those stats are for the USA. Good point.

I like stunguns, they are not deathly but effective.

No point and would actually make it far worse. If you are going to carry something that looks like a gun it had better be a gun. If they open fire on you because you are carrying a gun they don't know it is a stun gun.

Here nobody has guns.
You can bring a stungun to a fistfight.
Or a gun to a stungun fight.

I remember when I got my first pepper spray, I was told if I don't know how to use it, it can turn against me and I guess that applies to guns as well. A firearm is no joke, I agree, there should be a strict regulation but that's only one part of the problem. the other is controlling these criminals. That's the part where work needs to be done asap.

One of the many local security firms that the residents hire. You will find we have around 5 of these cars patrolling the area 24 hours. They are way faster than the police and we rely heavily on this type of service.

It's still sad.

Wail till the Texan reads this. He will be sending you photos of semi automatics on sale to 4 years olds in mad yankyville.

I remember watching that video with the mickey mouse ears on top of the barrel for sights. Thank God we don't have the array of weapons America has on offer as there would be no one left here. Our problem is our police force is just plain useless and there is no law and order. The local private security firms is what keeps law and order in the suburbs today.

I guess everyone has to make that decision according to where they are and how they feel safe.

I agree lots of folks have them that don't have the mental discipline to go with it.

I also agree that if you have one, it is best if you don't advertise it.

Unfortunately lots like to advertise the fact they have one. This actually makes them a target as that is what the crooks are after most of the time.
