A 35-year-old army captain from Cyprus, Nikos Metaxas, has admitted to killing at least 7 women in a serial killer case that's now gaining international attention.
It's alleged that the authorities in the region did little to investigate the disappearances and now the Justice Minister has recently announced that he is stepping down as a matter of principle and conscience because of the controversy surrounding the crimes.
It's alleged that the crimes had gone undetected for almost 3 years before they were uncovered. Now, that army captain has been detained and is still in custody.
Of those 7 victims, two of them were children, and the army captain has already allegedly confessed to those crimes in writing and he has allegedly admitted that he wants to go to prison because he's bored.
It's reported that the army captain had been using a dating app to meet the women and this case, these crimes, are referred to as the first serial killings to take place on the island.
The crimes didn't start to unravel until reportedly last month when heavy rain revealed a body that was close to a lake. The body was spotted by a tourist who then contacted authorities, and several days later more evidence started to be found.
Authorities in Cyprus might want to ask themselves how such an unhinged individual managed to make it through the ranks of the National Guard to become a captain and why he had never been detected. An individual who can initiate such violence against others doesn't have any respect for the property rights of people and doesn't respect that they have a right to be free from his aggression. The last thing that an individual like that needs is a uniform to hide under and isn't it a shame that it's arguably almost the perfect occupation to suit such a personality, giving someone a cloak under which they can initiate violence against others. Because of the personalities that would likely be attracted to such positions, it's even more critical that those organizations have thorough screening processes to try and prevent those predators from gaining such a position of power.
Critics have argued that if the police had conducted an efficient investigation into the earlier missing cases, that perhaps some lives could've been spared.
The police chief is expected to be meeting with the president at the end of this week and he could be the next one to offer their resignation over the issue.
