A very peculiar court case

in crime •  7 years ago  (edited)

A 52-year-old man was convicted of gross embezzlement in Central Finland and received a ten-month suspended prison sentence in June 2017. He had embezzled 46,000€ over the course of many years from his old father who had given him a power of attorney to handle his money matters. The father had passed away a year prior to the court case. In court, the man was both the defendant and the plaintiff as he was the only beneficiary of his father's estate. The 52-year-old presented a claim against himself to keep the state from successfully claiming the entire sum as proceeds from crime. The court agreed with him (the plaintiff) and he (the defendant) was ordered to pay 46,000€ in restitution to the plaintiff (himself) instead of the state as proceeds from crime.
