You have a choice

This is what the lower class women in India are told by their husbands. I don't want to generalize it, but it is the sad truth that most of barely educated women in India are facing. Call it lack of education or the male ego, the men are treating women badly and these women rarely complain for they have no knowledge about the consequences that their husbands or father's would face if they complain. I doubt they would complain even if they are educated about the laws, for they are taught to be followers than leaders from a tender age.

My heart cries when I hear stories about men treating their wives badly. I wonder why don't men treat their wives at least as humans if not equals. Years ago when I resided in Mumbai, my maid told me about her newly married friend. Her husband had poured kerosene over her and lit her in fire just bacause she didn't cook well when his friends came over for lunch. The wife who suffered 50% burns gave a statement to the cops that she had caught file while cooking and there was no involvement of her husband in it.

When I questioned my maid as to why her friend did that instead of putting him behind bars, she said that she would have no means to live her life if he was behind bars. No matter what, she still considers him her husband and that's when I realised what powers men. They know that they can manipulate women and get away with their inhuman outbursts.

Recently there was a similar news about a alcoholic man who ordered his wife late at night to cook the meat he had brought. Since she was feeding her 6 month old son, she requested him to wait which triggered his anger and he went on a killing spree that killed his wife and two kids. It was later he realised the intensity of his actions and understood that his wife is no longer alive to cover up, so he slit his wrist which landed him in hospital. Kids learn what they see and end up doing same to their wives. This should change. Men should know that women have a choice.

Education is very important to men and women. If you have maids at home please educate them about the laws and also tell them to spread the awareness among their friends. Tiny efforts like this can change future.
