Crochet Earring - 11 February 2025

With St Valentine's Day or any of its variations, Galentine's Day or even Palentine's Day, around the corner I decided to crochet something fast for my friends. I'll tell you how I made that crochet earring in the photo above.

I got this incredibly vibrant red colour in a cone in a charity shop ages ago. The yarn is very thin and textured. It’s so thin it could be sewing thread but because it’s so curly it’s impossible to use properly. I’m not sure what this type of yarn is called; it’s not ‘boucle’ but I’m not sure how to describe the texture apart from ‘curly’.

Despite the texture, thinness and slippery yarn I was able to crochet with it. Above you can see a sort of magic ring and my 2.5mm crochet hook although a 1.75mm hook would have been better suited. When I took the photo I'd just made about 12 double crochet stitches to start my project.

This little heart only has two rows and I found the pattern as a graphic on pinterest but I then also found a similar You Tube tutorial :

The tutorial is very clear and well paced so you can follow all the instructions easily. You can also download a free pattern from the Youtuber's website here. I only used the centre of the square as the earring but I’ll definitely try and make a granny square at some point.

The yarn was so curly that I couldn’t thread a fine enough needle so I found proper colour-matching sewing thread to join some beads onto the hook :

I didn’t thread all the beads I had available but only 3 just to give some space between the heart and the earring hook.

This process was much easier than trying to crochet the heart, but I was happy with the result as I managed to use a difficult yarn that I already had in my yarn stash.

I do feel that with proper crochet thread or even fine 4-ply (fingering) yarn the stitch definition would be better. Having completed this earring I got sidetracked into finding a gift box to put it in. I’ll show you what I came up with tomorrow.
