These are good initiatives. I never mined regular coins, but when I learned about folding and cure, I started doing it.

The bad side from the recent crytpo manipulation for me is that I got taken in for the pump and dump ride and got 1 BTC eaten away.. LOL... live and learn.

Peace.

Excellent article @gridcoinman !

Wow, nice one CM! Appreciate it. I was wondering why I was getting so many upvotes in such a short time. Let's hope this one goes to the top.

It's a double sided gain, the company gains fees while the consumers buys an appreciating currency. However, as the initial appreciation wears off the currency price might drop drastically.

That dump is the big problem as many people get caught off-guard, the other side of the coin is that many new people hear about science cryptos and volunteer distributed computing. So, it's an interesting situation.

How would organizations benefit from the work in mining these kinds of coins? Are they submitting the tasks to the blockchain?

The distribution of GRC is based on how much work you volunteer to the BOINC network, where you can run a number of different projects. The organizations in itself has nothing to do with GRC and is fully decentralized. The network bases the daily distribution of coins on a factor of "Recent Average Credit" for each project. The organizations benefits from the work done to uphold the network.

Adding to @sc-steemit's answer - Organizations benefit from these science-focused cryptocurrencies as they drive new users to volunteer for these distributed computing projects.

Gridcoin for example has become the #1 BOINC team for active BOINC computation: http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-5/team/list/16/0#1
