South Korea is one of the most open Asian countries and if Banning crypto couldn't work in China, then it will never work in a country where most of the youths are very active in crypto and where power seems to belong to the community if people who drive crypto business. This is all just FUD. CNBC published an article last night that South Korea will be banning cryptocurrency trading, however, this is not true in the slightest. They are imposing regulations and this already came to light on December 13th 2017. The dip in the market has been people panic selling off of this fake news. South Korea is not planning on banning cryptocurrency trading, and the market is going to rise! Scoop up all these coins at a discount while you can. The cryptocurrency market-cap is GOING TO FLY IN 2018. This is a great opportunity to buy, these coins are on sale!

We hv similar situation cropping up in india too...on one side govt is not regulating crypto currency whereas on the othr side there r rumours that govt is planning own crypto currency "laksmi".

In a post-Trump world, when I see a term like "fake news", I admit that I automatically recoil. I don't believe that reputable "mainstream" news outlets consciously or purposely spread false information. Certainly less than their competitors.
Yet, after reading this, I think you have a point here. I am very familiar with mainstream media often getting a lot of science wrong. Why is this? Well, most reporters aren't well-versed in science. If you want to find good information about science, you're more likely to get good information from a science writer.
I am brand new to the cryptocurrency scene, and it is not hard at all for me to see an average reporter being in a similar position when it comes to this topic. Much like with in-depth science, I can see how plenty of non-crypto writers are going to get things wrong - not from any intention to spread lies, but more just as mistakes made in ignorance.
So, I can totally see your point that mainstream media may not be the best source of accurate information about certain topics. (Of course, that does raise the difficult and controversial question: then what source DO we trust? And I imagine that answer changes depending on the topic.)

whether it's the case that reporters are deliberately distorting facts to sensationalize and fabricate stories for dramatic effect, or it's just that they're rather ignorant and incompetent and have very low standards for accurate journalism... who knows.

I'll check out that link. It's a prickly situation. While there's no doubt that the profit motive, and therefore the need to seek attention, is a large motivating factor in any kind of news one reads or views these days, the same will be true the more and more fractured those news sources and perspectives become. I think one of the biggest dangers to civil society is this fundamental fracture of perspective. For people to have fruitful discussions, there must be some kind of agreement on basic facts and values.
It makes me think of the printing press, and the Protestant Reformation. Lots of shattered perspective resulted, and it led to some really nasty battles and wars. Granted, I think the technology eventually led to progress and social benefit; but only after one helluva speed bump.
