Market Summary for Jan 30th

From the beginning, Jan 30th felt like it was setting up to be a non-conducive day in the crypto space. Day traders joining in Asia, and let's face it, having that odd inevitable look at www.coinmarketcap.com or the likes, could not help but notice that other than NEO and GAS - buyers emboldened by the hype surrounding the first Dev Conference in San Francisco - a tepid sea of red dominated the board.

On the background, as if listening to a macabre piece of dark music, the mounting numbers of posts on Bitfinex / Tether though Reddit and Twitter posts kept pouring in. The Tether fiasco on getting its house in order following the dissolution of Friedman LLP as its auditor, which may have appeased some fears, the USD/USDT peg making constant attempts to break lower - who is sitting on the bid sub 0.95? -, only to top it off with news that the US regulator CFTC sent a subpoena to Bitfinex and Tether back on December 6. However, as Charle Lee, Founder at Litecoin points out, the fact that they have been able to conduct business and issue further USDT should be reassuring. We shall wait and see.

Tuesday also leaves behind a barrage of must-read news, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announcing that it had frozen the assets of AriseBank, not allowing it to raise any additional cash from investors. As CoinLive reported, via CNBC, the SEC alleges AriseBank of falsely stating that it purchased a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insured bank which enabled it to offer customers FDIC-insured accounts.

Some investors from the latest ICO scam Prodeum certainly learned a few good lessons in the last 24h to conduct due diligence on new projects to invest.

If we were to remove the Tether / Bitfinex story from the equation, Tuesday might as well been a fairly constructive, as a fair share of positive industry-based news made headlines, including a major online shopping mall in South Korea due to introduce crypto payments, Bitcoin's mempool clearing up, with transaction fees down to 2-5 sat/B - can increase confidence to transact -, or the fact that Robinhood has reached more than 1 million people waiting to get registered for the App.

On project-specific announcements, Ripple continues its expansion, after we learned the token was clear to be listed in BitOasis, a top exchange in Dubai. Besides, Moneygram CEO confirmed they are set to leverage on Ripple’s technology as well. Meanwhile, Ardorgate went Live, introducing the Euro pegged token AEUR, Augur published its new white paper, titled 'A Decentralized Oracle and Prediction Platform', the acceptance of Monero got easier with the new Monero–Integration features, while Storj recently announced that they are moving from petabytes to exabytes. Lastly, we also learned that as part of Waltonchain Annual Meeting, seven strategic cooperation agreements were signed.
