There are hundreds of exchanges, and many are only able to operate and accept users in their own country due to strict government regulations. We have decided to discuss the ones that most people either will use or hear about in the US, Canada, Australia and Europe.
1. Coinbase
This exchange is an entry point and exit point for fiat currency. Consider this as a money gateway to get to the other exchanges. It is FDIC insured so if your money is stolen, you are insured up to $100K. This is where you use money from checking savings, and credit cards, to buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, Lite coin and bitcoin cash. 60% of new users never get pass this point. However, beyond coinbase are other exchanges with hundreds of coins listed.
2. Bittrex
Most popular exchange because it's been around for a much longer time than the others. It is safe, secure, and has hundreds of coins listed. Our fave coins listed here are: Powerledger, Enigma, and Civic.
3. Poloniex
We don't use this exchange any longer because in our opinion, the exchange is not trustworthy. Last summer, they did some questionable actions which lead to our decision to stop using Poloniex. We pulled out all of our crypto and put it in myetherwallet or Bittrex. We may return to use them in the future, but in our opinion, we feel that they would have to earn back our trust first. Poloniex still works and alot of people use this and like this platform. We just say keep your ears to the ground.
4. Binance
This is one of the newer exchanges, and is about 6 months old. Currently beats Bittrex in terms of volume. It is safe, easy to use, and lists new coins faster than Bittrex. We also just recently learned that they have criteria that ICOs have to fulfill, before they can be listed on Binance upon release. Basically, they have quite alot of things that they have in place to help ensure investors that the coins that are listed here are: 1. Not scammy and 2. Will make them and their investors alot of money. Our fave coins listed here: Iota, Quantstamp, Bread, and EOS.
5. Kucoin
This exchange is the new kid on the block. They have alot to prove, and are very hungry for market adoption. They list new coins faster than Binance does. I like that they are very hungry for new business but since they are very new, they reallyhaven't learned the growing pains of scalability and a disaster response.
Our fave coins listed here: Bounty0x, Ethlend, Substratum, and Utrust.
6. Hitbtc
This is a popular exchange with a mediocre interface. They are as hungry as Kucoin when it comes to listing new projects. They pre-sell ICOs for "I owe yous." Here's an example of this: If you are an American citizen and couldn't participate in a particular ICO like Enigma (due to various regulations set forth by the SEC), you were able to buy Enigma from here with an "I owe you" token using Ethereum, Bitcoin, or US dollars. The token code for enigma is ENG, but Hitbtc listed this as CAT (Enigma Catalyst). When Enigma was released on this exchange, Hitbtc then released the Enigma token to you. So, even though you may have gotten Enigma at a higher price than ICO, you still bought it at a lower price than once it was relased in the exchange.
7. Ether Delta
Unlike the ones previously mentioned, this is a decentralized exchange, and the most popular of these. It rides on the Ethereum network. It is very difficult to use, but most coins get listed here first, before they are released in the other exchanges. They will list anything because they don't have any criteria that coins have to meet to get listed. As a result, alot of scam coins get listed here. In addition, if the Ethereum network is congested, it is very, very slow. Despite all of these drawbacks, it is our favorite exchange. Many ICOs get listed here first, prior to hitting the other exchanges, so we can get new coins at a lower rate, sometimes even lower than ICO price. Our fave coins listed here: Bitdegree, Matrix, AI Network, and Event Chain.
8. IDEX
This is the newest decentralized exchange. It is similar to Ether Delta, except it has a better user interface. It is also very hard to use and takes alot of patience because it is very slow. We have not gotten any coins here as of yet, but they do offer the same coins as Ether Delta.
Which exchange is best for new users?
In our opinion, Binance and Kucoin are best for beginners because out of all the other centralized exchanges, they will usually release the coins the fastest.
Ether Delta and IDEX are really hard for new users to learn how to navigate. You also need alot of patience to use them to execute buy and sell orders because they are very slow. However, most ICO tokens list here first before on anchage giving an advantage to more advanced users.
Other Exchanges that are honorable mentions.
Cryptopia
Kraken
Ethfinex
Coinexchnge
Liqui
Yobit
Coss
Cobinhood
Gate

I’ve always enjoyed poloniex and recently started using binance because they had coins that poloniex didn’t have. The one bad thing about binance that I’ve noticed so far is withdraw fees!! Sure their trading fees may be low but I bought 2 different tokens and when I went to send them to my ledger Nano I found out it was going to cost me over $11 each transaction. One token I bought 140 of and the transaction fee was 20 tokens, the other I bought 100 tokens and the fee was 12 tokens. I checked the network and the fees were .1 token for each leaving 19.9 and 11.9 for binance to keep. Not a good site if you plan on buying and holding unless you want to hold there. I plan on holding these token for one year in hopes they do well but now they must do even better than expected to make up for the chunk that binance took as a transaction fee.

transaction fees are through the roof because of network congestion. hang in there it will get better.

I understand that. What I’m saying is I checked etherscan for my transactions and the fee was minimal. Binance is gouging withdraw fees imo.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Would you be willing to go into more detail about why you lost trust in Poloniex? (I also heard bad things from Trayvon Martin when I was first here; but then it turned out Trayvon was a shill for BitConnect, so I wasn't sure how seriously I should take him.)
I'm very new to steemit and cryptocurrency. Learning as much as I can. The only reason I'm interested in Poloniex is that BlockTrades seems to charge higher prices to trade for the convenience; and I don't see steem being traded on any other exchanges? Is there an option other than Poloniex to buy and sell steem directly?
Finally, I'm wondering if there's a good resource that lays out all of the fees associated with all of the major exchanges?
Thanks!
