I've not invested in STEEM yet for many reasons, one being the fact you actually stated. It's nearly impossible to gather significant amount of STEEM power without investing into the platform FIRST. It's hard to decide whether to invest on the platform or not, because it does have a number of problems for me to invest anything significant.
For now, I've just posted for the sake of it, get to know how the platform is. I have a pretty good image now though. Good luck with your content as well :) Followed you mate.

I also didnt decide to invest much into this platform. To tell you the truth I think that it is worth investing some small amount just to play around and learn about this tool. I also believe that it will have quite large audience. It may not overtake facebook and maybe it wont be the biggest social media platform, but it's still a place to be.
And believe me, it's really hard to start without powering up your account on steemit. It's pretty much first thing you need to do if you're thinking about building reach here.
