Great post. I am mostly buying and selling crypto on Poloniex.com at the moment. I am dipping my toes in XMR mining with Minergate. Will see how that goes.

I suggest you to avoid minergate and join one of the pools on http://monero.org/services/mining-pools/ (for example I'm on https://supportxmr.com) and user xmr-stack-cpu or another miner based on your hardware.
Minergate is know as a hash stealers from users pc.

Mining coins takes so much time - You are betting on a 6 month time frame. Using the current information you have.
Buying cloud mining is also a no no for me. 1 year contract is too long. Mining difficulty will make your contract less profitable. or even unprofitable.
Me too, I just buy and sell on exchanges. Better liquidity.
