Mobile Cell Phone Mining! For real! Is it worth it?steemCreated with Sketch.

Hi!

Decided to run a little experiment. I got myself a copy of the minergate mining app in the play store and set it up on my old lg mobile phone.

The results are less than extraordinary! But, that is to be expected. People are using dedicated asic machines to mine bitcoin and other alt coins.

My hash rate is shown here mining Monero. The minergate app automatically switches to the most profitable coin you are capable of mining. Quick and easy plug and play. Perfect for beginners!

I am not suggesting that anyone run this program! My phone was getting hot and it was not very responsive on the high setting.

I would be afraid that your phone could over heat and could cause problems if left unattended.

Mine kept sending notifications that the miner had stopped, then restarted, etc. I don't know what caused this issue.

I have since uninstalled the app from my phone.

Back to the drawing board!

I agree, mining Monero with consumer CPUs isn't the best choice, after accounting your electricity cost (For charging your phone, that is). To put in comparison, my i7-4500U has an average hashrate of 110H/s, plus, electricity is expensive in my country.
So I did an experiment mining Monero with Microsoft Azure free trial (still ongoing), you can check it out here!

Based on the progress so far, I would say that it's going pretty well :)

Thanks!

I am a total beginner. Setting up my own cloud mining virtual machine seems way beyond my current skill set. :)

I've a MacPro with 12 processors/threads what mined Monero with 226.9 H/s = 0.003/day. You can forget a smartphone for mining.

For sure! I forgot to mentiin how quickly the battery was running down!

I always wanted to know the Monero mining hashrate for my phone. That's very useful, sad truth that is. But by right, the performance should be comparable to CPU of desktop computers based on Geekbench's benchmark data though ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Oh well...
@hashclouds What's the model of your phone?

Comparable to a desktop cpu? Nice!

I may do a test with my newer LG, that should run way faster.

The test phone is a LGL41C

I had been wondering if this was viable but I think you confirmed my concerns. Did you run it on medium the whole time? I'd love to find something that can mine in the background even at a snails pace while not losing my phone functionality or worrying about it burning up.

I tried high, but let the screen go dark. I thought it was bricked! Not very responsive.

I think you have to keep the screen on.

Medium should work fine. If you are using the phone, you could set it to low if it is going too slowly.

You won't make much. I would be concerned about long term effects on the phone.

Let us know if you give it a go. I would be inyerested in hearing about it!

Sounds like it might turn your phone in to a real "burner" phone.Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Lol!

It really isn't funny when they "burn"
