This is my first Steemit post. Since I discovered Steemit through researching on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, many of my posts will be related to my experiences involving crypto and blockchain in general.
I've been aggressively accumulating bitcoin these past few months. It's reached the point where I could not sleep well at night knowing there's a danger that I could lose all my coins through carelessness, theft, or some external event such as a Bitcoin hard fork and the exchange or wallet I'm currently using won't support the dominant chain.
I finally decided to get a Trezor hardware wallet. Until now, I had relied heavily on the blockchain.info wallet, but I had not read any definitive word on support for the impending soft fork or hard fork. I deferred getting one because I found it pricey (around $170 from Amazon), but with the amounts at risk, it became an easy decision all of a sudden. It arrived via courier this morning. It came in a tightly-sealed box below.
I had difficulty opening the box because the top and bottom flaps were glued.
The device itself is not that big. It's roughly the same size as a car's remote lock.
I transferred all my coins to my wallet accounts I created through the Trezor Wallet interface (which is just a Chrome extension).
Edit:
Here are some observations:
- At the moment, the Trezor Wallet only supports Bitcoin, Dash, Zcash and Ethereum. I'm quite disappointed that Litecoin is not yet included, though I understand that Litecoin-Segwit is available in the beta version of the wallet.
- The Trezor wallet supports multiple addresses and accounts--something I thought I would sacrifice once I leave blockchain.info's wallet. This was a pleasant surprise.
- The wallet can display equivalent values across fiat currencies.
- Receiving and sending money has been seamless; no major hitches so far.
