Bait for a thief: how some crypto scammers earn other

in crypto •  7 years ago

We are already used to the fact that scammers in the cryptocurrency area are much more often than we would like. However, a new type of fraud in the industry turned him upside down. In the honeypot type scheme, the goal is to become easy-profit amateurs.

The first fraud of this type was the publication by the attacker in the chat of his secret key to the MyEtherWallet wallet; Inside the bag, there was $ 5,000 in Minereum (MNE): ethernet-based tokens, which are positioned as "the first token with a new approach to mining in smart contracts". According to Bitfalls, "the project is dying slowly, but it has a constant low cost, so you can sell tokens in the exchange for at least $ 4000."

Immediately after the private address was published, other chat participants rushed to get MNE out of the bag.

They had no idea what they were getting into. Although the wallet contained an MNE of $ 5,000, there was absolutely no ether to pay for the gas needed to process transactions in the etherium network. Therefore, to extract the MNE chips, the thieves had to send the transmission first. They did not know that the creator of this scheme wrote a script that automatically redirected the incoming transmission to another wallet. Since the ether did not fall into the bag in which Minereum was contained, the MNE chips remained in place.

At the time of publication, the second bag collected approximately 0.73 ETH.
